Tariffs to be applied to steel and aluminium entering the US - expert comment
Commenting on the US decision to apply tariffs to steel and aluminium, Markus Wagner, Associate Professor in Warwick Law School, said:
"The recent announcement by the Trump administration concerning aluminum and steel products could spark a trade war with serious repercussions for international trading relations well beyond the metal industry.
"The EU and Canada have already voiced their disagreement with the proposed action which has little or nothing to do with the purported rationale of national security.
"It is highly likely that, just as was the case in the early 2000s, increasing barriers to aluminum and steel imports will trigger retaliation by other WTO members that will leave almost everyone worse off."
