UK 'experiencing the impact of climate change': sustainability researcher comments

The UK State of the Climate report, published today, suggests that the UK is already feeling the impact of disruptive climate change. Dr Jonathan Clarke, from the Global Sustainable Development programme at the University of Warwick, comments on how society needs to prepare for these effects.

Dr Clarke said: "In recent weeks we have seen devastating flooding, storms and extreme heat events, across the globe and closer to home in the UK, that viscerally demonstrate the risks of a changing climate. While there is a rising awareness of the need to decarbonise our society to limit the degree of global warming in future; individuals, governments and societies appear much less ready for the extreme threat posed by climate change right now. If we are to avoid the worst impacts of these coming disasters to our health, economy and livelihoods, we need to be more prepared as a nation, promoting ‘adaptation’ in our built environment, protecting infrastructure and building more resilience in society at large."
