PATHWAY Postdoctoral Awards

The PATHWAY Postdoctoral Awards provide funding for existing postdoctoral fellows and research assistants at Warwick, who self-identify as being either Black or of Black heritage, to access training and networking opportunities to enhance their research career development.

Applications for the inaugural 2024-25 Awards are now open, closing at midnight UK time on 15 December 2024.

Scheme Objectives

PATHWAY Postdoctoral Awards support current Warwick postdoctoral fellows and research assistants who self-identify as being either Black or of Black heritage to access research career development opportunities.

The scheme forms part of the Warwick PATHWAY programme, which aims to create "a career pipeline that does not leak” and develop a thriving community of Black researchers across all faculties, presenting a clear vision of career pathways for Black academics in higher education.

Five awards of £2,000 each are available in the current round (24/25). Activities eligible for support under this scheme include:

  • Training courses

  • Conference attendance
  • A workshop or other event to showcase the applicant's research to the wider academic community and support the development of new networks and collaborations
  • Impact & Engagement activities to take the applicant's research to an external audience

  • Travel to attend the above events/activities
  • Costs related to independent research fellowship applications

  • Consumables for additional research beyond the scope of existing projects

The scheme is not about funding existing research activity, rather it aims to help awardees to extract the maximum value from their existing research for the benefit of their own career development. Applications for activity to carry out existing research or which primarily benefit the applicant's department or supervisor will not be eligible.

Eligibility

Applicants must identify as being either Black or of Black heritage and be current postdoctoral fellows and research assistants at the University of Warwick with employment contracts extending to at least 31 July 2025. They must not hold a PATHWAY Early Career Fellowship within the award period.

Funding period

Awards will be made available from January 2025 until 31 July 2025. Any monies unspent by 31 July will be forfeited.

The PATHWAY Community

Applicants will have access to PATHWAY Community events, including career development seminars and other networking activities aimed at supporting the career development of the Black researcher community at Warwick, from undergraduate through to postdoctoral researchers.
