‘Researching Contemporary Culture in Africa’
This seminar is for Early career researchers and PhD students. It will discuss the practicalities and methodologies necessary for cultural research in Africa. Our guest speaker will speak on the challenges of Africa for researchers, and speak about his experience of leading research for the Arterial Network and the African Arts Institute. Early career researchers and PhD students will also be giving short presentations.

‘Interview with Mike van Graan’
Dr Jonathan Vickery and Dr Yvette Hutchison will interview Mike van Graan before an open audience. Mike is a playwright, cultural activist, executive director and UNESCO technical advisor. He will discuss his career, mission, values and pioneering cultural work across the African continent. How does a creative person becoming involved in policy, strategy and the leading of cultural organisations? How are the arts playing a role in social and economic development in post-apartheid South Africa?

The Annual Public Lecture
Attracting a wide public and campus audience, this serves as a major showcase for the GRP-ID. Mike van Graan will present the work of the African Arts Institute in the context of the promotion of rights, democracy and diversity in post-aparthied South Africa. This occasion will also be used as a platform for announcing the winner of this year’s GRP-ID Photo Competition, the prize to be presented by our distinguished guest.

Research Opportunities in Africa
This meeting is open to researchers and academics interested in undertaking research in Africa, or in forming a strategic partnership with the African Arts Institute towards small or large funded research projects. Such projects could involve opportunities for field work, PhD study, public events and internships.

Centre for Cultural Policy Studies project in Culture, Community and Development.
This seminar is open to all interested postgraduate students studying development. It will feature masters students on the MA in Arts, Enterprise and Development presenting a summer module project – a new festival of art and jazz in the city of Coventry. The festival hopes to grow and be able to attract artists and musicians from all over the developing world.

Global Cultural Economy Roundtable
This seminar will comprise a select number of invited scholars and UNESCO advisors to debate current research, policy and strategy in the uses of culture for social and economic development – at national, EU and UN levels. Its framework is this year’s GRP-ID theme: ‘Cultural Economies and Cultural Activism’, and will examine the nature of cultural labour in creative economy development, particularly in relation to the role of change agents and social enterprise.
