BM&I Spotlight PGR Competition - Me, Myself & AI

Don't forget to watch our video!
In Spring 2025 the Business, Manufacturing and Innovation SpotlightLink opens in a new window (BM&I) hosted an interdisciplinary research competition, inviting postgraduate research students across the University to explore the impact of AI on work, organisations and industry, through creative submissions. We received a range of interesting applications from students across all faculties, and our final cohort included talented representatives from Arts (Modern Languages and Cultures), Social Sciences (WBS), SEM (Physics and WMG) and Cross-Faculty (CIM). This diversity of backgrounds stimulated especially rich discussions during the event, with lively question and answer sessions following individual poster and video presentations. In addition to generating exciting ideas about the central theme, the event also explored the value of theorising problems in interdisciplinary ways.
Submissions included:
‘Me, Myself and AI – Who’s really in charge?’ - Amir Cheshmehzangi & Rupika Gulati, WMG (1st place) - Poster.all.WBS.2025
‘From Fragmentation to Collaboration- Building a Multi-Actor Community for AI-Assisted Translation’ - Xiaoyan Tan, Modern Languages and Cultures (2nd place) PDF version Poster-Xiaoyan Tan
‘Make Me A Robot’ - Luke Robert Mason, Centre for Interdisciplinary Methodologies (3rd place)
‘Science and AI: A Buoyant Thought Experiment’ - Ayham Yousif, Physics - Ayham_Yousif_-_Me,_Myself_and_AI[1]
‘Unlock the Black Box: Explainable AI for Transparent and Trusted Manufacturing’ - Danial Safaei, WMG - Danial_Safaei_-_Understanding_AI[1]

We would like to thank all of our fantastic student researchers for their hard work and creativity. It was a pleasure to showcase such a variety of thought-provoking submissions.
Feedback from the students included:
The Me, Myself and AI competition... provided a gateway to perform interdisciplinary research not necessarily linked to one's studies that might otherwise seem difficult to undertake.
As a researcher, this experience reminded me of the importance of collaboration, iteration, and vulnerability. Thank you for all the help and support you provided throughout the whole process.
This process... was both intellectually demanding and deeply rewarding. I gained rich insights from the thought-provoking questions raised by audience members, the constructive feedback provided by Jason... and the inspiring presentations delivered by other participants.
The BM&I SpotlightLink opens in a new window is a strategic initiative at the University of Warwick that champions interdisciplinary research, addressing complex challenges in industry and society, including our current work on collaboration with the creative industries. In addition to the work described above we have hosted a number of interdisciplinary events and sponsored a range of collaborative initiatives.
