Hosted by the Business, Manufacturing & Innovation SpotlightLink opens in a new window, join us for a lively afternoon of presentations, discussion and networking. Carla Toro (WMS) and Sangho Chae (WBS) will present on their recent work on how supply chain work conditions impact workforce wellbeing.

Carla Toro and colleagues have been researching workforce mental health in the construction industry since 2022, supported by funding from National Grid, Crown Estate, Mates in Mind and University of Warwick Policy Support Fund. It has become clear that there are stressors unique to the industry that may be contributing to the high incidence of poor mental health and suicide rates that are 3x higher than other industries.

Carla will share some of these findings and in particular demonstrate how the structure of the supply chain alongside common business practices can intensify stressors for workers in the supply chain. Carla will also share insights from an ongoing consultationLink opens in a new window she is co-leading with DBT and Construction Leadership Council, which will provide industry stakeholder perspectives on how these problems can be addressed.

Sangho Chae has recently publishedLink opens in a new window on how buyer behaviours within the trucking industry can increase occupational health and safety risks. Analysing data pertaining to 260 owner-operators, this research explores how certain practices lead to service suppliers engaging in risk-taking behavior that deteriorates their performance and safety.
