Business & Manufacturing Research Themes

Business, Manufacturing & Innovation Collage

Our research themes

By bringing together a wide range of disciplines, the Business, Manufacturing & Innovation Research Spotlight is working to help shape the organisations of the future.

Organisations, Networks & Societal Impact

Exploring the societal and environmental roles of industry.

The BM&I Spotlight looks at how people and groups work together to make a difference in the world. This includes everything from charities and community groups to businesses and government bodies.

We explore how these organisations connect, share ideas, and support each other through networks. Our research is uncovering how their work creates real change in society—whether that's improving health, supporting education, tackling climate change, or helping communities thrive.

Our goal is to understand what makes these efforts effective and how they can have the biggest positive impact.

Innovation Management & Technology Development

Working with a wide range of organisations to drive innovation.

From start-ups to public sector bodies, we collaborate with a wide variety of organisations to help them unlock innovation and creativity.

One of the key ways we can do this is by harnessing the potential of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI). Whether it's improving decision-making, automating routine tasks, or exploring new ways to engage users, we support businesses in understanding and applying these tools effectively.

Our goal is to not just adopt new technologies for the sake of it, but to integrate them in meaningful ways that spark new ideas, solve real problems, and create value.

Innovation isn’t just about having the latest tech - it's about using it wisely.

Performance & Wellbeing

Exploring the evolution of the workplace.

From flexible work arrangements to the rise of digital tools, the way we work is evolving fast. We’re exploring how the modern workplace is changing - and what that means for the people in it. Alongside this, we're looking closely at how organisations support employee wellbeing and maintain productivity.

It's not just about hitting targets anymore; it's about creating environments where people can thrive. We're particularly interested in how leadership styles and human resource management practices influence both individual and team performance. The goal is to understand what really works when it comes to leading healthy, motivated, and high-performing workplaces.

The Evolution of the Creative Industries

While our work spans many sectors, we have a particular interest in the future of the creative industries - a space that’s constantly evolving. This includes everything from the performing and visual arts to film, media, and the booming world of computer games. These industries don’t just entertain; they shape culture, drive innovation, and create significant economic value.

In particular, we want to explore how creative work is adapting in the face of digital change, new business models, and shifting audience expectations.

Closer to home, we see exciting opportunities for collaboration and knowledge exchange with the thriving creative cluster in Leamington Spa—often called ‘Silicon Spa’ for its strong gaming industry presence. By connecting with local studios, artists, and media professionals, we’re helping to bridge the gap between research and practice, and supporting the region’s role as a leader in creative innovation.
