Our research themes

By bringing together a wide range of disciplines, the Society and Culture Research Spotlight is aiming to help improve access to knowledge and opportunities across the globe.

Health, Inequalities & Society

Differences in health outcomes and experiences of wellbeing can be determined by intersecting inequalities which operate at individual, group, and society levels. We explore health across time, space, and place.

AI, Tech & Society

New and emerging technologies are radically transforming the way we live, work, play, communicate, and imagine. We engage critically with these changes, the relevance of inequality to them, and build diverse coalitions of expertise.

Violence, Human Rights & Politics

Peace and justice are under threat globally from rising inequality, shifting geopolitics, climate change, and democratic backlash. We invite inclusive conversations and work with policy makers, politicians, and communities on the issues that matter to them.

Education, Inclusivity & Culture

Education provides opportunities for individuals and contributes to the development of healthier, more equitable and informed communities. We explore education across the formal phases of primary, secondary and tertiary levels as well as considering the value of lifelong learning, and the role of the university as a civic institution in responding to the challenges of an uncertain world

Mobility, Migration & Society

Different types of mobility – economic migration, climate-induced migration, conflict displacement, changing practices of mobility – are a long-standing characteristic of human society as well as a pressing contemporary issue. We focus on the social, economic, and political justice questions which are at the core of mobility.
