#21 - Identify transferable skills in your Moodle Module Space

  1. Students don't recognise skills they are developing.
  2. You don't want to turn this into a tick-box exercise, but rather you want to prompt students to reflect more deeply and widely about their learning.
  3. Do this in a systematic and coherent way in and across modules and programmes.
Solution overview

For each activity that you include online, or in class, encourage students to reflect on how they might use the skills they are developing in other contexts. Consider the transferable skills that they are brining to your module. You might add a page to your Moodle Module Space that names and describes a set of transferable skills, perhaps with a distinctive icon for each skill. Then use those names and icons throughout your content and teaching to indicate how activities relate to skills. You could go further, creating Moodle Badges to award to students who demonstrate that they have achieved the skills.

Process
  1. First of all check with your department to see if sets of transferable skills are already in use.
  2. There are many ways in which you can implement this - a single page, or putting information about skills throughout your Moodle pages. Perhaps consult with your students to see what works best.
  3. Consult the Moodle support information (follow the link in the tools section) to learn more about Moodle Badges.
