About Us

The Community Safety team is part of Wellbeing Support Services and has a primary focus on safeguarding everyone within our campus community. We work extremely closely with all departments who are concentrated on ensuring the best possible service for students, staff and visitors. People are important to us and we will always endeavour to provide outstanding customer service to keep you safe.

We can be reached 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and we work within the following areas:

Student Support and Safety
  • Providing wellbeing support for all students on campus
  • Supporting the Residential Community Team when dealing with unusual incidents involving students
  • Patrolling residential halls and their environs, providing support and reassurance to prevent incidents occurring
  • Confidentially reporting bullying, harassment and hate crime
Emergency and Incident Response
  • Responding to all incidents and emergencies (e.g. fire alarms, first aid support, and road traffic collisions)
  • Providing all first aid and defibrillator response
  • Escorting emergency response teams
  • Managing fire evacuations to ensure the safety of building users
  • Responding to personal safety alarms
  • Escorting vulnerable people, if required
Campus-wide Management
  • Managing the University's electronic access control system
  • Managing and operating the University's CCTV system
  • Reporting faults regarding safety, security and general maintenance for the good upkeep of the campus
  • Patrolling all academic buildings
Events
  • Authorising outdoor events
  • Supporting Students' Union staff and Student Societies during major events
  • Providing close protection security for visiting VIPs
  • Managing traffic flow for all major events on campus
  • Managing demonstrations to ensure the safety of protesters and attendees
Parking
  • Liaising with the Transport and Future Mobility team to support operational management of the car parks on campus
  • Patrolling car parks and using CCTV to proactively prevent crime
  • Ensuring compliance with the University's Parking Regulations and issuing Penalty Charge Notices to support the Transport and Future Mobility team, when required
Other duties
  • Giving talks on personal safety and security
  • Providing crime prevention advice
  • Giving advice on safe travel abroad
  • Carrying out security surveys and risk assessments
  • Carrying out and supporting investigations
