Explosives or Detonable Substances

Information to assist the Shopper, Budget Holder and Specialist Approver determine the appropriate Hazard Levels for requisitions made on behalf of the University. This page also explains what checks should be carried out by both the Budget Holder and the Specialist Approver as part of their responsibilities for managing the introduction of explosive or detonable substances into the University.

To consult with the Fire Safety Advisor prior to the requisition being made.

To determine the correct Hazard Level has been assigned.

To ensure that there are suitable storage facilities.

To ensure that the location and facilities where it will be used are suitable for the hazards it presents and that personnel have any specific training necessary.

To consider impact on existing waste streams.

Budget Holder must ensure that there are sufficient storage facilities for working with the material, that the environment is suitable for their use and that local rules are established and followed.

Specialist Approver to ensure that the Fire Safety Advisor is consulted for all explosives purchased of any Hazard Level.

Sufficient information must be made available to demonstrate how the material will be managed and stored once purchased.

Fire Safety Advisor to be informed of all requisitions made under this Material Description. Finance Officers to check that the Fire Safety Advisor has approved the requisition prior to release of the order.
