Waste - Disposal - Clinical/Biological

Information to assist the Shopper, Budget Holder and Specialist Approver determine the appropriate Hazard Levels for requisitions made on behalf of the University. This page also explains what checks should be carried out by both the Budget Holder and the Specialist Approver as part of their responsibilities for managing the procurement of services to dispose of clinical or biological waste from the University. Only authorised staff will be permitted to requisition a clinical / biological waste disposal service contractor.

Offensive / Hygiene waste (TIGER bags) which can be sent to deep landfill for disposal at an approved licenced facility

 

Cytotoxic or cytostatic waste (PURPLE bags or bins);

Infectious waste which may be 'treated' (ORANGE bags or bins);

Both require disposal via an approved licenced facility and incineration.

Waste which is considered 'highly infectious' (YELLOW bags or bins);

Waste which is required to be incinerated under the HTA;

Above require disposal via an approved licenced facility and incineration.

Only 'named' Budget Holders to be permitted to raise a requisition for arranging disposal of clinical or biological waste.

To ensure that the correct Hazard Level has been assigned.

To ensure that the location and facilities where the waste is stored prior to its disposal is suitable.

Consultation to be held with the Biosafety Advisor or Contract's Manager to arrange disposal.

The Specialist Approver to consult with the Biosafety Advisor for any requisitions made from anyone who is not a 'named' Budget Holder.

 

Finance Officers to be provided with a list of 'named' Budget Holders who can requisition clinical/biological waste disposal from the Department via the Approved Supplier.
