How to use an anemometer to check LEV

Conducting monthly checks on local exhaust ventilation (LEV) systems is a key line of defence in ensuring that they are working correctly to keep people safe. It is also a requirement under the LEV Policy and associated Code of Practice.

Below is a series of short video clips to demonstrate how to use a rotating vane anemometer to record the air inflow rates on Class I and Class II microbiological safety cabinets (MSCs) and chemical fume cupboards, which is one of the required monthly checks.

Written instructions including diagrams are set out in the associated Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). This document has been written to be generic to the whole University, so individual departments should adapt and approve it as necessary for their own use.
