How to connect to the eduroam Wi-Fi network on Android

Introduction

eduroam, short for “education roaming,” is a secure, global Wi-Fi access service designed for the international research and education community. It enables students, researchers, and staff to obtain internet connectivity across campus and at other participating institutions worldwide, simply by using their home institution’s login credentials.

How to connect to eduroam on Android devices

To connect to eduroam on your Android device, you need to follow the steps below. Depending on your device model and Android version, some screens and settings may vary slightly.

Note: Some older Android 10 and 11 phones are unable to connect to eduroam due to a software bug in the Android firmware. Manufacturers affected by this issue include Xiaomi, Oppo, Motorola, Fairphone and OnePlus.

Manual setup

  • From the Android Home Screen, tap the Menu button.
  • Tap the Settings menu.
  • Tap the relevant menu for your wireless settings, this may be Connections, Wireless & Networks, Network and Internet, or Wireless or Wi-Fi. It may also be possible to search for the Wi-Fi settings.

  • From the list of connections, tap eduroam.

  • Select the following settings:

EAP method: PEAP.

Phase 2 authentication: MSCHAPv2.

CA certificate: Use system certificates

Domain: warwick.ac.uk

Identity: Enter your University of Warwick usercode in this format: u1234567@warwick.ac.uk

Anonymous identity: Leave as blank.

Password: Enter your Password.

Online certificate status: Request status

Note: Android versions from Android 11 have introduced new ways of handling CA certificates. Select Use system certificates to use the certificates that come pre-installed on your device.

  • Finally, tap Connect. Once completed you will be able to access the Internet.
