Successful implementation of new chemical inventory system, LabCup, in the Chemistry department
LabCup, our new chemical inventory system, was successfully implemented and was endorsed by the University Health & Safety committee to be the chemical inventory software for the remaining departments that use chemicals. The IDG Portfolio Delivery team has supported the Chemistry department to adopt a new chemical inventory system, over the course of 2023 between February and September 2023 in Chemistry, which brings benefits to the users of the chemicals in the department, and to colleagues in Health & Safety:
Users can now more easily search for and manage safely items in their inventory due to a powerful search function and breadth of information available within the system. 40% of users reported that it took them less time to search for chemicals than before when they used the previous system, Quartzy.
A centralised system provides better visibility for Health & Safety to easily assess hazards across the department & access to inventories is less opaque.
We are now able to produce detailed information about chemical hazards for the Emergency Services should an incident occur which enables them to make an informed decision of how best to respond.
The Chemistry Tech team commented that the IDG project team’s presence in the department, their knowledge and process management, worked really well. This team’s ability to manage the system procurement processes and foresee challenges has ensured successful delivery for the department.
The Health & Safety Chair said that “The project team has been great, the team in IDG worked tirelessly to provide support … [we] valued having people who had professionalism.” They benefitted from “Effective project management … to keep hold of all threads; [we] couldn’t have purchased something like this without … project team.”
The next phase of the project will be to roll Labcup to the remaining departments that use chemicals, during 2024-25.
