WebGroups

WebGroups is a tool for University staff to create ad hoc groups of people, which can then be given access to various online resources.

Note: Students do not have access to WebGroups.

Rather than having to assign individuals access, staff can create a group containing those individuals, and then give the group permissions and access to resources. When you add or remove members from the group, this will automatically cascade through any permissions you have assigned to the group on these systems.

Advantages of WebGroups

  • It's quicker and more efficient to use WebGroups to assign permissions than having to enter each individual username.
  • If the users who need access to a page or service change frequently, it is much easier to update or maintain the group lists.
  • Groups can be included in permissions lists for SiteBuilder pages. SiteBuilder's cascading template will update all the admin and edit permissions for all the pages underneath a certain point with everyone's individual codes in one go, thus making the editing of pages much quicker (Note: This is a feature of SiteBuilder, rather than WebGroups).
  • You can add a group to a group, enabling you to create sub-sets of users with additional permissions.
