Tech Takedown: apps for interactive learning and teaching
Workshop led by Sara Hattersley (SFHEA) Learning Development Adviser, University of Warwick
Building active learning and interactive participation into Higher Education teaching practice is a key component of the student centred approach. Technology, particular apps for interactive engagement, can support this aim, particularly with the ubiquitous nature of student-owned mobile devices, but it also carries the risk of becoming gimmicky, novel and not supporting pedagogy adequately.
As part of a 'takedown' of the tech, this workshop will scrutinise a range of apps designed for interaction, considering their pedagogical merits for learning and assessment. Participants will experience use of the apps first hand, through a range of activities, whilst exploring key pedagogical themes, including gamification, reciprocal teaching and peer and self-assessment. Then, the second part of the workshop invites participants to develop teaching and learning materials through their favoured apps, tailored to their subject discipline, with the opportunity to share and evaluate these with peers.
Attending participants will be invited to download apps to their personal devices and set up their own teacher accounts (all free) in advance of the session, bringing devices along, or using those provided by LDC.
