What is internationalisation and how are we implementing it in our own practice? For example, what do we mean by participation, how we can encourage it and what kind of adjustments to our pedagogy are required?

This session brings together highlights of the 2018 Education Conference from WIHEA’s Internationalisation Learning Circle (Making Sense of Internationalisation; Approaching the design of an internationalisation toolkit; Participation and the student experience: Goals and realities in the internationalised classroom and beyond) and key points from a 2017 ‘Window on Warwick’ session: Internationalisation and the student experience.

We will explore staff and students' experience of internationalisation at a grassroots level, and consider our individual roles and responsibilities in contributing to demonstrate a gold standard of internationalisation in TEF submissions. The session will explain some tools, resources and short training courses that CAL has developed and is continuing to develop to address the challenges that are emerging. You will be encouraged to reflect on your own experiences of working, teaching and learning in an ‘internationalised’ context at Warwick and to discuss how academic departments can promote greater levels of meaningful participation from all students, regardless of nationality and cultural background.

Dr. Sophie Reissner-Roubicek

Prior to her current role as Senior Teaching Fellow at the Centre for Applied Linguistics, Sophie was based at the University of Auckland in New Zealand where her doctoral research was conducted, working in the Department of Applied Language Studies and Linguistics as a tutor/lecturer in ELT methodology, as a Language Advisor in extra-curricular English language support, and for the Centre for Academic Development's Academic Practice and eLearning Groups as a resource developer and researcher. Other qualifications include BA Hons in Latin & Greek (University College, London), CELTA, and MA Hons in Language Teaching and Learning (Auckland).
