What next? Having completed all three sections of Preparing to Teach in Higher Education and receiving the certificate of completion you can now consider progressing to the Academic Professional Pathway: PGR APP PGR.

Preparing to Teach in Higher Education comprises of three parts. They all must be completed successfully in order to be credited with meeting this skills development requirement.

The three parts are:

  1. The Preparing to Teach in Higher Education Moodle (expected completion time is three hours);
  2. A face-to-face session delivered in conjunction with your home department/research centre or faculty (expected session length is 3-4 hours);
  3. A reflective response to the course (submitted through the Moodle).

Once all three have been completed you will be issued with a certificate of completion.

DepartmentalSessions

To participate in Preparing to Teach in Higher Education you first need to speak with the person in your department or centre who is responsible for either postgraduates who teach or skills development. They will be able to provide you with details on when your department will be offering access to this course and how to enrol.

If necessary, LDC will also organise sessions by faculty, likely in term two.

The University values the efforts of its wide and active community of postgraduate tutors. It also considers teaching as a core skill needed for postgraduates to develop into well rounded members of the academic community.

Therefore, Warwick requires that all PhD students complete a teaching skills development course by the end of their first year of registration.

Preparing to Teach in Higher Education has been created by the Teaching and Learning Unit of the Learning and Development Centre to provide an introduction to the core skills and techniques that promote active, student-centred learning in the higher education environment. Delivered in conjunction with departments and research centres from across the University, Preparing to Teach in Higher Education balances fundamental aspects of good teaching practice with discipline-specific perspectives.
