Heads of Department Induction and Development
The HoDs Induction and Development Programme has been redesigned in response to feedback and consultation with leaders from across the institution. It aims to support you in developing your leadership within an academic context as you undertake your new role as HoD.
These pages will provide all of the information you will need to take part in the course and will also provide useful links to Professional Services teams who can support you in your role.
Programme Aims
The programme aims to create a collaborative space for participants to develop and enhance their own leadership capability and to support HoDs to generate positive change to advance departmental and institutional strategic objectives.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the programme participants will have;
· Gained a thorough understanding of what the role of HoD entails and the institutional context.
· Increased self-awareness of their own values and leadership behaviours and approaches.
· Explored the nature of academic leadership, different leadership models and how they might be applied to different academic situations.
· Developed and practiced skills in dealing with difficulty and conflict at work.
· Explored how to effectively build influence and impact.,
· Explored approaches to strategic leadership and managing change.
· Created strong, supportive networks in both academic and professional service departments both during and beyond the programme.
· Applied their learning to current leadership challenges in their context.
Leadership and Management Development Provision
