It is always darkest before dawn. Two years ago, this time of the year, the team hit an all time low being relegated to Division 3. It is probably one of the lowest the team has ever been and hopefully will ever be. However, the last two years have been a miraculous turn of events in terms of performance as well as results. In Division 3, we had a flawless season winning all 18 of our league matches with 3 of our 5 players having a 100% win record. It was a perfect season. That however, was expected from us especially with the strength and depth in our team. The team however would be losing 2 key players through graduation, which would leave the team slightly depleted. Division 2 was a new ball game and we all knew it. We knew that every match would be close and that every point would count.
It has been a long season for the team that started early in term 1 and finally ending on the last Monday of term 2. Injuries and illness made it even more difficult having to often fill a weakened team. There were ups and downs throughout the season constantly reminding us to expect the unexpected and to just give it our all. We finished second in a league of 10 teams behind Birmingham 2nd with 14 wins and 4 losses. There were many close matches over the course of the season that could have gone either way, but thankfully it went the right way most of the time. All in all, it was long campaign that saw us prevail surpassing all expectations set at the start of the year. It was a combination of improving players as well as amazing support we had from Warwick Sport through the Focus Team programme.
It is now a challenge for the team to maintain a high level of squash throughout the coming year and hopefully maintain premier division status. As the saying goes, "the difficult part is not getting there, but staying there." Coach Steve Townsend also reiterated the importance of Warwick Squash being represented in the premier division saying, "It has been about 15 years since we were in premier last."
