Warwick Snooker finish the season on top
The Warwick Snooker Club has shown that it is on the rise by ending the year ranked the number one Snooker team in the country.
At the Midlands cup in January, which is a university event organised and run by the Warwick Snooker exec, the two Warwick teams impressed with the 1st team narrowly losing in the semi-finals of the Championship, while the 2nd team made the final of the Trophy (2nd tier competition). Guneet Walia had the best individual success, reaching the final of the Championship competition. The Individual Trophy final was an all Warwick affair - Sam Matto-Willey, a fresher, defeated another fresher, Rahul Sodha, 2-1 in a tightly contested match.
At BUCS, the Warwick 1st team reached the team Championship final, losing in a deciding frame on the pink to Leeds university. The 2nd team reached the final of the Trophy competition, again losing on a deciding frame, this time on the black! The third team, in which 4 of the 5 players were competing in their first snooker competition for the club, surpassed expectations to reach the quarter-finals of the Shield competition. Both the 2nd and 3rd team finished as the highest ranked 2nd and 3rd teams in the country. This combined with the 1st team being the second best team meant that Warwick University finished the year as the overall number one University Snooker team in the country for the first time since 2009.
Following their success at BUCS, two of the first team players, Guneet Walia and Stewart Ball, represented their country at BUCS Home Nations, held in Belfast, where 5 teams including England, Emerging England, Scotland, Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland (Wales did not put out a team) competed to be crowned best national team in Britain. Stewart Ball made the quarter finals of the individual competition and Guneet Walia the last 16.
