Eligibility
To be eligible for the main Warwick Bursary you must meet all of the following eligibility criteria:
- Be a Warwick home student enrolled on your first, full-time (inc. 2+2) undergraduate course which started between September 2016 and October 2024.
- Have an annual household income, as assessed by Student Finance England of £35,000 or below.
- Receive a Tuition Fee Loan* and Maintenance Loan from Student Finance England (SFE).
- *Except for students granted the WBS Foundation Year Scholarship.
- Been educated in a state school or college in England for your sixth-form education.
- Alternatively, attended an Independent School in England for your sixth-form education but received either (i)a full fee-paying means-tested bursary or (ii) a means-tested partial bursary which is clearly indicative of an annual household income of £25,000 or below.
If you are a medical student who meets all of the above eligibility criteria you can receive the Warwick Bursary in your first year of study. However, this only applies if you started your course in the academic year 2021-22 or later.
If you undertake a study year abroad you can still receive the Warwick Bursary provided you meet the eligibility criteria.
You will only be entitled to bursary payments for the time you are fully enrolled at the University. Therefore, you will not receive bursary payments while temporarily or permanently withdrawn.
Awards
The amount of award that you can receive from the Warwick Bursary depends on your annual household income (as assessed by Student Finance England). Awards are paid on a sliding scale of £1,000 - £2,000 per academic year, which is demonstrated in the below table.
Annual Household Income | Main Warwick Bursary |
---|---|
Less than or equal to £16,000 | £2,000 |
Greater than £16,000 and less than or equal to £25,000 | £1,500 |
Greater than £25,000 and less than or equal to £35,000 | £1,000 |
For the 2024-25 academic year, household income will be taken from the 2022-23 tax year and will depend on the people you live with: your parent(s)/carer(s), your parent/carer and their partner or your partner. For more information on how your income is assessed see our web page on student support for continuing students.Link opens in a new window
Application
Most students do not need to apply for the main Warwick Bursary. Student Funding Support receives a list of potentially eligible students from Student Finance England (SFE) and subsequently checks whether each student meets the rest of the criteria outlined above.
If you are approved for a Warwick Bursary you will receive an email to the account you have registered with Student Finance England to notify you that a letter is available for you to view. Here you will be able to find details about your award, including payment dates. Please note, that the letter can take up to 14 days to be visible in your Student Finance England account.
If you attended an Independent School for your sixth-form education, you must submit an application form and relevant evidence through the link below.
Within the online application form, you will be required to attach evidence of your bursary. Your evidence must:
- Include your name and date of birth
- Show the number of years you were awarded a bursary (if you attended an Independent School for both sixth-form years, the evidence needs to demonstrate that you received a bursary for both years).
- Show the percentage of your school fees paid by your bursary each year.
- If you received a partial bursary (i.e. a bursary that did not cover 100% of your school fees), then your evidence also needs to explicitly state that your bursary was awarded based on a household income of £25,000 or below.
If you are required to submit an Independent School application for the main Warwick Bursary (assuming your Student Finance England application has been completed and means-tested) you should expect to hear from us within 4 weeks of submission, provided you have submitted the relevant evidence correctly.
You will be notified by email from Student Funding Support regarding the outcome of your application. You will also receive an email to the account you have registered with Student Finance England to notify you that a letter is available for you to view. Here, if you are successful, you will be able to find details about your award, including payment dates. Please note, that the letter can take up to 14 days to be visible in your Student Finance England account.
Payment
The main Warwick Bursary is paid directly into the same bank account that you receive your Maintenance Loan from Student Finance England. Therefore, you do not need to provide Student Funding Support with your bank details.
- The Warwick Bursary is paid in three equal termly instalments. Your exact payment dates will be outlined in your confirmation letter (within your Student Finance England portal).

If you are a late applicant for Student Finance and subsequently your Warwick Bursary is approved after the start of term, these dates may not align with your specific payment dates. Please refer to your Bursary Entitlement Letter from Student Finance England for further details.
Please note, we cannot make Warwick Bursary payments for retrospective academic years. However, as long as we receive your household income information from Student Finance England in time to approve your award before 31 July 2025, we will still pay you the full amount for the 2024-25 academic year.
Warwick Bursary payments will cease if you take temporary withdrawal but can be re-started if on return to study you continue to meet all of the eligibility criteria (awards will be pro-rated depending on the date a student returns to study).
