The Warwick Bursary - Eligibility Criteria
- Be a Warwick home student enrolled on your first, full-time (inc. 2+2) undergraduate course which started between September 2016 and October 2022.
- Have an annual household income, as assessed by Student Finance England at below £35,001.
- Be in receipt of a Tuition Fee Loan* and Maintenance Loan from Student Finance England.
- *With the exception of students granted the WBS Foundation Year ScholarshipLink opens in a new window.
- Been educated in a state school or college in England for your sixth-form education.
- Alternatively, attended an Independent School in England for your sixth-form education but received either (i) a full fee-paying means-tested bursary or (ii) a partially means-tested bursary which is clearly indicative of an annual household income of below £25,001.
Please note - Medical students who meet all of the above eligibility criteria can receive the Warwick Bursary in their first year of study. However, this only applies to medical students who started their course in the academic year 2021-22 or later.
The Warwick Bursary - Awards
The amount of award that an eligible student can receive from the Warwick Bursary depends upon their annual household income (as assessed by Student Finance England). Awards are paid on a sliding scale of £1,000 - £2,000 per academic year, which is demonstrated in the below table.

For the 2023-24 academic year, household income will be taken from the 2021-22 tax year and will depend on the people you live with: your parent(s)/carer(s), your parent/carer and their partner or your partner.
- In certain circumstances your assessment might be based on your own income, for example, if you are aged over 25 at the start of your course.
- You don't have to provide details of your earnings from part-time work but if you have income from another source, such as investments or income from property, you will need to declare it.
- For more information on taxable income check out the GOV.UK webpage, Income Tax - Introduction.
The Warwick Bursary - How To Apply
Most students do NOT need to apply for the main Warwick Bursary. Student Funding Support receives a list of potentially eligible students from Student Finance England (SFE) and subsequently checks whether each student meets the rest of the criteria outlined above.
- Students who are approved for a Warwick Bursary receive an email to the account they have registered with Student Finance England to notify them that a letter is available for them to view. Here students will be able to find details about their award, including payment dates.
However, if you attended an Independent School for your sixth-form education, you will need to submit an application form and evidence. Please see the adjacent tab for more information.
The Warwick Bursary - Payment
The main Warwick Bursary is paid directly into the same bank account that you receive your Maintenance Loan from Student Finance England. Therefore, you do not need to provide Student Funding Support with your bank details.
- The Warwick Bursary is paid in three equal termly instalments (October, January and April). Your exact payment dates will be outlined in your confirmation letter (within your Student Finance England portal).
-
The standard Warwick Bursary payment dates for the 2022-23 academic year are as below:
-
1st instalment - 21 October 2022
-
2nd instalment - 20 January 2023
-
3rd instalment - 24 April 2023

-
If you are a late applicant for Student Finance and subsequently your Warwick Bursary is approved after the start of term, these dates may not align with your specific payment dates. Please refer to your Bursary Entitlement Letter from Student Finance England for further details.
Please note, we cannot make Warwick Bursary payments for retrospective academic years. However, as long as we receive your household income information from Student Finance England in time to approve your award before 31 July 2023, we will still pay you the full amount for the year.
Warwick Bursary payments will cease if a student takes temporary withdrawal but can be re-started if on return to study the student continues to meet all of the eligibility criteria (awards will be pro-rated depending on the date a student returns to study). Permanently withdrawn students will have payments cease completely.
The Additional Bursary - Eligibility Criteria
Additional bursaries are targeted at students most in need. To be eligible for an Additional Bursary, students need to meet all of the main Warwick Bursary criteria and one or more of the Additional Bursary Criteria.
Please note - Please note - Medical students who meet all of the above eligibility criteria can receive the Warwick Bursary and Additional Bursary in their first year of study. However, this only applies to medical students who started their course in the academic year 2021-22 or later.

As part of the University's initial Cost of Living support package, a "Cost of Living Supplement" has been launched.
- This supplement will give students who receive a Warwick Bursary in 2022-23, an additional 10% payment of their annual entitlement (e.g. students who receive a £2000 Warwick Bursary, will receive an additional £200).
- The additional 10% payment also applies to the Additional Bursary (e.g. students who receive a £2000 Warwick Bursary, will receive the £200 Warwick Bursary Cost of Living Supplement, as well as a further £100 Additional Bursary Cost of Living Supplement).
- The "Cost of Living Supplement" will be paid automatically to these eligible students from December 2022. Students will receive a one-off Cost of Living payment for their Warwick Bursary. If the student is entitled to the Additional Bursary then they will receive a further one-off Cost of Living payment for their Additional Bursary.
Please note, we cannot make Cost of Living payments for retrospective academic years as the scheme was launched for 2022-23 only. However, as long as we receive your household income information from Student Finance England in time to approve your main Warwick Bursary (and Additional Bursary if eligible) before 31 July 2023, we will still pay you the full Cost of Living amount for the 2022-23 academic year.
Warwick Bursary Cost of Living payments will be pro-rated for students who return from temporary withdrawal part way through the 2022-23 academic year. Additional Bursary Cost of Living payments will not be pro-rated for students who return from temporary withdrawal part way through the 2022-23 academic year. Permanently withdrawn students will not receive any Cost of Living payments.
