Christmas on Campus


There's loads of stuff happening on campus this Christmas over the next few weeks. Explore below what's on, where you can get a Christmas meal, and when Uni services are open over the Christmas break. Also, why not get involved in our #warwickxmas social media campaign - launching soon!

Sending Christmas post? If so, remember that the Post Office will be extremely busy from the end of November onwards. The Student Post Room has some guidance for sending and receiving post over the festive season and details of some alternative services, if you need something really quickly.

Sticking around on campus? The Holiday Student Lounge will be open in the National Grid Room of the Warwick Arts Centre, 1000-1700 each day from 21 December to 31 December (excluding Christmas and New Year days). You can also join the dedicated facebook group to meet fellow students, arrange socials or find out more about events taking place on campus after term ends! Need accommodation? Warwick Accommodation provide a limited amount of campus accommodation over Christmas, available from Saturday 12th December until Tuesday 5th January (inclusive). Book a place.

Many student societies are also hosting Christmas events for their members - please see here for deails.

Other local events are taking place in Birmingham, Coventry, Kenilworth - including carols at the castle on the Saturday 19 -Leamington, Stratford and Warwick, with Christmas markets in Birmingham, Coventry and Leamington.

26th November

Thanksgiving - PG Hub: All postgrads welcome. They'll be collecting tinned and dried food for charity, so please bring a donation.

Santa28th & 29th November

Arts Centre’s Family Weekend: Fancy a Frozen sing-along? There's all that and more in these two fun-filled days of family entertainment, arts, sport activities and delicious food. Including a Christmas food and craft market 10-5pm.

29th November

Christmas Spectacular concert: Start your Christmas countdown with this sensational show of festive music, dancing and fun at the Arts Centre, hosted by the white-bearded man himself.

30th November - 9th December

Warwick Christmas Lectures 2015: Six nights of fantastic new ideas, explosions, experiments and answers to questions taxing the University of Warwick’s finest minds. After the sell-out success of the past years, events are likely to be popular so get your tickets before it’s too late.

3rd December

Carolling at Hoar Park, 1730-2030.

Good Food Society event: Christmas Baking Class: The Good Food Society will guide you step-by-step in baking a chocolate truffle cake, and you'll also get a chance to make it yourself! All ingredients are provided - all you need to do is turn up!

Warwick Sport's Christmas Bauble Challenge: Win tickets to the SU Christmas Party! Navigate your way round the obstacle course whilst wearing a giant bubble! Who will be quickest on the day?

6th December

7th December

Chaplaincy Carol service: Join us for our annual carol service at 5.15pm in the Chaplaincy, they will be welcoming students and staff from across the university as well as members of the chamber choir to sing carols and then enjoy mince pies and mulled wine - getting us in the mood for Christmas!

8th December

Elf (SU cinema): Buddy the elf (Will Ferrell), 6'3" tall and the 'only baritone in the elf choir', lives happily at the North Pole. One day though, he discovers he is in fact a human, and heads to the 'magical land called New York City' to find his real father.

9th December

Food Market: Join us at our market day in the Piazza running 10am-3pm, customers can expect high quality, local fresh produce and a colourful and eclectic mix of street food.

Santa Rides: Come along and join in with a Santa Ride, in support of the Heart of England Community Foundation – Santa Suits available whilst stocks last!

The Christmas Ball: This year's SU Christmas Ball will take in the magic of Central Park in Winter as the union is transformed into a beautiful sub-zero landscape! They've got Santa, The Adorable Yeti, The Whispering Christmas Trees, an indoor Ice Rink, and all manner of festive treats and surprises in store.

14th - 17th December

Christmas market: University House restaurant will be transformed into a winter market with stalls selling festive food and drink from around the world, books, gifts and crafts. Can we tempt you to come and try sweet crepes and savoury galettes, luxury gingerbread hot chocolate, bratwurst, bockwurst and pulled brisket rolls and Middle Eastern inspired dishes? There will also be a gift wrapping service (bring your presents and have them stylishly wrapped), a Christmas shop selling hampers, freshly baked bread, wines, chocolates and all sorts of festive treats plus a gift shop selling a range of Christmas gifts.

14th - 18th December

Office for Global Engagement’s Christmas Dinner at Xananas: All students welcome. The cost is being covered entirely by the Office for Global Engagement, but there is a £5 refundable deposit required to secure seats. Dinner includes two courses and a glass of wine as well as welcome drinks in the reception area. Those of you with children are particularly welcome as we’re expecting a visit from Father Christmas!

PG15th December

A Very Postgraduate Christmas | : Join us in the main atrium of the SU for music, food and plenty of festive fun. Don your Christmas jumpers (they’ll be prizes for the best ones) and get into the Christmas spirit with your fellow postgrads! Tickets are free but make sure you book! Booked tickets include a drink and mince pie. If a hot chocolate is more up your street, Curiositea will also be open from 4-8pm as an alcohol-free space.

16th December

The Nutcracker (ROH Live Screening): Christmas simply wouldn’t be Christmas without The Royal Ballet’s classic production of The Nutcracker.

18th December

Registrar's Christmas Drinks: Join Ken Sloan for festive drinks and carol singing this Friday from 3.30pm in the Arts Centre plaza, by our new community Christmas Tree. All are welcome.

19th December

BBC Big Band Christmas Concert: Join the internationally acclaimed BBC Big Band for a swinging programme of festive favourites such as Let It Snow, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town and Mel Tormé’s The Christmas Song – and much more!

Dr Zhivago: The classic Russian epic romance, set against the backdrop of the October Revolution. Plus a chance to purchase a seasonal mid-screening festive treat from the Café Bar.

20th December

Armonico Consort - Christmas Oratorio: Join the acclaimed Midlands-based ensemble for a performance of Bach’s huge, exuberantly colourful Christmas Oratorio, with none other than the great Jamaican-born bass-baritone Sir Willard White heading a starry team of soloists.

24th December

Trip to Stratford-upon-Avon: Join the Office for Global Engagement to see the Christmas lights and soak in the Tudor Christmas atmosphere.

Mass: Join the Chaplaincy for Mass at 1230 on Christmas Day. The service will be followed by sandwiches, tea and coffee.

Mass will also take place throughout each Sunday at 1230 throughout the Christmas vacation.

Two course lunch for £10 which includes a choice of carvery, vegetables and all the trimmings, “help yourself” dessert buffet plus free juice and water. Cocktails and festive hot and cold drinks also available. We will be taking bookings shortly.

The Chaplaincy is jointly hosting the Student Lounge with the Office for Global Engagement in the National Grid Room at the Warwick Arts Centre. As well as the opening hours during the week, you are invited to join our chaplain, Kate, for a Festive Café Fribble on Thursdays 24 and 31 December between 11am and 1pm in the Student Lounge – free tea, cake and activities!

Despite undergoing refurbishment the central chaplaincy space will remain open but will be a noisy place to be during the day (best to use the Student Lounge) but will be more pleasant in the evenings and will be open on card access until 10pm each day.

The Islamic Prayer Hall will be closed completely from Monday 14th December to Friday 29th January while major improvements are carried out. Details of alternative places to pray can be found at

If you need medical assistance when the Health Centre is shut, you can call 111 for phone advice by the NHS or go to the walk-in City of Coventry Health Centre. The Centre is open 7/7, 8am to 9pm.

If you are severely injured, you may go to the A&E in University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire.


All IT services will be available through the holiday period with no planned outages. Services will be monitored and we have a limited emergency out-of-hours provision to respond to any critical issues that occur.

The IT Help Desk will close at 17:30 on 22 December and re-open on 4 January at 08:30 .

The Atrium and Learning Grid will remain open 24/7, only closing from late afternoon on the 24th until the morning of the 26 December.


Be aware that transportation schedules are often busy and disrupted during Christmas. We recommend you double check all bus and train timetables before departing to make sure you arrive at your destination on time. There is likely to be no public transport anywhere on 25 December and a reduced service on trains and buses on other days (particularly 26 December and 1 January).

Campus Shuttle Bus: 

  • Day Service: Please be aware that Shuttle Bus B has ceased operating until Monday 11 January. Shuttle Bus A will operate until Monday 21 December and resumes on Monday 04 January.
  • Night Service: To continue as normal every day apart from Christmas Eve to New Years Day (inclusive).

Bus Services: 

  • De Courcey will not be running service on Christmas Day or Boxing Day and will have limited service through the week between Christmas Even and New Year's Day.
  • National Express Coventry will not be running on Christmas Day but will offer Sunday Services throughout the rest of the Christmas week.
  • Stagecoach's website is currently being upgraded. Try using Traveline for Stagecoach timetables and other transportation options.
  • You can view live bus departure here.

Rail Services:

  • National Rail's website provides a summary of the train services being provided by each Train Operating Company during the Christmas and New Year period. Note that there are no train services running on Christmas Day and only certain services will run on Boxing Day. Train services will stop running much earlier than normal on Christmas Eve, Thursday 24 December 2015.
  • You can follow the latest information about train services on Twitter using the hashtag #ChristmasWorks.

  • Taxis will likely charge higher rates on these days as well and remember that winter weather, particularly snow, can severely disrupt public transport services.
  • If you are travelling by the Meter, you should never pay more than is displayed, unless agreed with the Driver. Meter price is per Taxi, not per person.

    In all instances, if you are travelling with a pre-agreed price and not by the Meter, then you and the Driver must agree the price and destination before travelling.
