Welcome Week profile - Gemma Barber
As part of Welcome Week 2018, we speak to a variety of staff about their involvement.
Name – Gemma Barber
Job title – Student Experience and Engagement Manager (Undergraduate Programme)
Department – Warwick Business School
1. Can you tell us a bit about your role?
My role is really exciting and dynamic with no two days the same. My role remit sees me working alongside students and staff to deliver a programme that offers a rich student experience that represents the demands of modern-day student life. In WBS we strive for excellence and this means continual improvement, so I regularly meet with students in my weekly drop-ins, through focus groups and research but also organise enrichment events and manage pastoral care processes.
2. And what’s your involvement in Warwick Welcome Week 2018?
Myself and my colleague, Georgia Stanley (Student Experience and Engagement Coordinator) are the Undergraduate Team’s dedicated Student Experience Team, though student experience is very much a wider team effort. With consultation with former students and staff we have developed the programme of content for all WBS incoming first years during Welcome Week. We hope that what we’re offering is information and insightful, yet fun and helps you settle into Warwick and WBS. Please do feel you can provide Georgia and I with your feedback about how it was for you!
3. This year sees an entirely new approach and programme for Welcome. What benefits will this bring to new students?
Having a Welcome Week is a fantastic opportunity for students to orient themselves before the rigours of their studies begin in Week 1. I urge you to take advantage of this time to try new things, and make friends from across the University community.
4. What are you most looking forward to about Welcome Week?
Meeting as many of the new students as possible and campus buzzing again!
