Film and Television Studies’ session for the University of Warwick’s Pre-University Summer School will provide you with an introduction to some of the key skills you can expect to acquire, practice, and hone over the course of a Film & Television Studies degree, as well as a sense of how learning on the degree is structured. You will be asked to read a short piece of film theory or criticism before the session. Then, during the session, you will be asked to make notes as you listen to a lecture and watch a short film. Finally, you will have an opportunity to digest and develop your understanding of the film through a seminar discussion with the session leader and your peers. The session will introduce you to some of the key critical and theoretical approaches our students use in the analysis of moving images, and impart an understanding of cinema’s cultural significance.
From Enlightenment to Postmodernism: as an introduction to Arts and Humanities Studies, the scope of this session explores the impact of key socio-political world events over from c.1750-1950 CE, such as revolution, industrialisation and modern war, examines and analyses how they are represented and shaped further in literature, art, photography and film.
How do we bring a play from page to stage? This interactive taster session will introduce students to the way we work in the Theatre and Performance Studies Department at Warwick - blending theory with practice to explore artistic choices and their wider social, cultural, and political meanings. Drawing on material from our first-year module From Text to Performance, students will engage in practical exercises and seminar discussions. The session will guide students through the creative and analytical process of transforming a written text into performance; encouraging them to think critically about interpretation, staging, and meaning-making.
That’s Entertainment – Ideas are not enough!
The media and entertainment industries are major employers regionally, nationally and globally – television, music, film, performing arts, publishing, games are all successful ‘creative’ industries in the UK. Great ideas and talented people are a vital part of these success stories – but there’s also a lot of hard work and creativity lying behind them. In this session we will consider the shape and scope of the creative industries, and explore some of the challenges and opportunities you might face in a future creative career.
The session will be run by Professor Chris Bilton, the director of the BA in Media and Creative Industries at the University of Warwick. Chris writes about creativity and the creative industries and is part of CreaTech Frontiers project currently launching in the West Midlands.
- An introduction to Liberal Arts
Getting a feel for Liberal Arts: A different kind of university journey: In Liberal Arts, we don’t teach in the way lots of other departments do. We’re not about asking you to learn specific content. What we do, though, is ask you learn how to solve complex problems using a diverse set of tools. In this session, we’ll introduce you to a concept called ‘problem-based learning’. Using this, we’ll explore ideas connected with travel and identity to give you an insight into how learning works in Liberal Arts and how it might work for you.
