The Aesthetics of Dance: Call for Participants

Dance has been a vital component of the human aesthetic over the decades and has recently become much more prominent in the social scene, often used as a form of non-verbal communication, competition or ceremony, evolving into numerous styles, all of which are aimed at expressing different facets of society.

The project will begin with an exploration of selected texts that address the aesthetic of dance, which participants will be able to react to and use in their own personal responses. This will be followed by weekly workshops, bringing in the aforementioned companies to teach the basics of various styles and guide students in their individual explorations of the dance aesthetic. This project is bringing in a variety of workshop leaders who will specialise in different styles, such as the Jasmin Vardimon company, and the Anurekha Ghosh company.

Participants will explore the role of dance in a historical and cultural context, investigating what ‘dance’ is and what it means to them. Participants will be asked to look into key texts and asked to suggest and research supplementary material. There will be an introductory seminar to ensure understanding of these texts and to exchange ideas and debate over particular perspectives. The project will culminate in at least one performance that amalgamates the shared learning experience in a physical presentation, open to an audience.
