08 Warwick Economics Summit Coordinators

Isabella Fausti and Giovanni Pierdomenico

Warwick Economics Summit Coordinators

Dear Finalists, We acted as overall coordinators for the Warwick Economics Summit 2020. After such an intense experience, the end of our journey at Warwick is approaching and it is the time for us to collect our thoughts and reflect on our experiences. Despite the uncertain and turbulent circumstances, we would like to send a message of encouragement and of celebration of our time at Warwick. We think WES – as all the other societies you might have joined at Warwick – has been of great significance during our degree. In our experience, WES has allowed us to establish long-lasting bonds, and it helped us to realize how much a group of students is able to accomplish, motivating us to always strive to do better. The 2020 Warwick Economics Summit has welcomed renowned figures such as Zanny Minton Beddoes, Editor-in-chief at the Economist, Shirin Ebadi, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Avinash Dixit, Professor Emeritus at Princeton. For those who were part of the audience, we hope removing the distance between yourselves and renowned scholars and policymakers has been an opportunity to learn, and most of all, that it has inspired you to become the person you wish to be. This is certainly not the ending we expected. Distance makes goodbyes harder but we truly hope we will all have the chance to meet again, also thanks to the Department’s Alumni initiatives. The labour market we are about to enter is more challenging than in the past and many of us are facing uncertainty around our future studies. We are, however, privileged to have received excellent training during our time at Warwick, which will enable us to stand out despite the current difficulties. We are thankful to the Department of Economics for making our undergraduate degree so full of opportunities to learn and to grow and for creating such a wonderful and diverse community of students. We will do our best to keep in touch with the Department and attempt to give back for their efforts – and we encourage all of you to do the same. With our best wishes, Giovanni and Isabella

It is very strange that we are not going to see you at your graduation this July, but I am sure we will have a chance to celebrate your achievement with you at a future date.

It has been a great pleasure and privilege to work with you over the last three years and I would like to thank you all for your fantastic contribution that you have made to the variety of events, projects and initiatives that we have developed in the Department during your time here. Thank you to those who helped as mentors, volunteers, student ambassadors and SSLC members. We are grateful to everyone who provided feedback to us (via surveys or focus groups) as your comments have been invaluable in shaping and re-shaping our provision to suit your needs and to those who will follow in your footsteps.

I am personally indebted to those who offered their time and support at open days and offer holders open days as well as at special events such as Question Time, Students’ Question Time, 360 Lectures, Careers Events, Quiz Nights and many more. A special word of gratitude goes to the student societies, mainly Warwick Economics Society, Warwick Economics Summit and Warwick Politics Society. These events would not have been the same without your involvement.

I have met a lot of you individually and often thought that you had a great future ahead of you -beyond your studies, as you have showed great intelligence, creativity, confidence and adaptability and these values are in great demand in the workplace, particularly now when we are forced to re-evaluate our choices.

Please remember that you are joining a large community of Warwick Economics alumni (about 13,000) scattered all over the world with whom you share a valuable connection. Please use this connection to your advantage and be positive about the future. Many of our alumni have been in touch recently to send you good wishes and we will pass them on to you via the webpage.

I hope that you would want to keep in touch and you can do so by joining our alumni newsletter, our Warwick Economics Alumni LinkedIn Group, following us on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram or just emailing us using economics.alumni@warwick.ac.uk as we would love to hear from you to find out how you are getting on. If we can be of any further help, to connect you to our former students, do let us know.

I am confident that you will all be successful in pursuing your goals and dreams and I wish you all the very best. And please remember that ‘in the middle of difficulty lies opportunity’ (Albert Einstein).

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

What are your favourite memories of your time at University?

Walking to Tesco those late nights in first year, relaxing in the Piazza after exams in term 3, and those neon and smack nights that I don't remember and the piecing together of what happened the night before over breakfast in Varsity

What will you miss about University?

The campus, friends from all around the world and the novelty that each day provided. The bustle on campus and even the struggle of finding a seat in the library in term 3

In what ways has your time at University prepared you for what comes next?

University has prepared me for life in a lot of ways. It's made me more independent and realise how resilient I am. But mostly, University has shown me how despite everyone's backgrounds may differ you are never alone. There is always somebody that you can relate to and who share the same interests.

Is there a message of goodwill you would like to share with the rest of your cohort?

Be it pop culture, TV shows or movies, life is often shown as a set of milestones. Of these milestones, graduating from University is one of the most meaningful as it's the stage between Student and Professional and although the circumstances in which we reached this milestone is different than what we imagined, nothing and nobody can take this achievement from us, and I am a overly joyed to have reached this stage with all of the students in this batch. Our batch is the definition of adapting to the situation and our graduation will always be a unique story to tell!

Dear RAE students,

I hope you feel have been challenged by the demands of this module as the standards expected are very high. But we are able to set this challenge because of the level of high quality training you have received in your core and optional modules across the breadth of your degree. Along with all of my colleagues, I never cease to be surprised and delighted by the creativity, independence of thought and technical abilities demonstrated in your dissertations.

Typically, the academic levels achieved go well beyond what would normally be expected of an undergraduate, as is demonstrated by the remarkable achievement of our RAE students in international competitions each year. I hope you have enjoyed the challenge, feel you have grown from it and take great pride and satisfaction in all you have achieved. I wish you all the very best for your future and hope that the skills that you have developed in the RAE module will help it be a bright and rewarding one for you.

What are your favourite memories of your time at University?

Picking up the massive W in the Economics quiz night.

What did you enjoy about the Economics Department?

The support from the Economics office and the flexibility to undertake such a wide range of modules.

In what ways has your time at University prepared you for what comes next?

When you are confronted with a challenge - the moment is never as big as you think it is, it comes down to the little things executed perfectly.

Is there a message of goodwill you would like to share with the rest of your cohort?

Best of luck to everyone in their future adventures.

What did you enjoy about the Economics Department?

Without a doubt, the economics common room was my favorite facility the department offered. Though I did use this room quite often and appreciate the creation of study space for students, the real reason for the glee with which I read the commencement email was that I would no longer need to hear my smug PAIS friends boast about their special room and free coffee machine. And yes, though we had to pay for our coffee, I can guarantee it was much better. On another note, I look forward to seeing everyone next year for our in-person graduation, assuming certis paribus of course.

Congratulations to you all on completing what my alma mater called:

"Bright College years, with pleasure rife,
The shortest, gladdest years of life;
How swiftly are ye gliding by!
Oh, why doth time so quickly fly?
The seasons come, the seasons go,
The earth is green or white with snow,
But time and change shall naught avail
To break the friendships formed..."

I had the pleasure of your company in industrial economics (EC231), game theory (EC341) and financial economics (EC334) and, of course, RAE. Watching you develop and talking with you about economics - and so much more besides - is perhaps the greatest reward of being a lecturer, and I want to thank you for that.

All graduates face an uncertain future; as the first to set foot in this new world, yours is more uncertain than most. But you are so resourceful and ethusistic that I am sure you'll relish the challenge and the liberty it brings. As you head out into this wilderness, feel free at any time to report back:-) Good luck, and good times!

What are your favourite memories of your time at University?

There's too many to choose from! Most of my favourite memories were just meeting new people and forming new friendships with a wide variety of people in the last 3 years.

What did you enjoy about the Economics Department?

Many of the tutors I had during my time at Warwick would always go above and beyond to help with any queries I had.

What will you miss about University?

All the friends I made and our shared experiences of university life - from brilliant and eventful nights out to even simple things like going to lectures and seminars together.

In what ways has your time at University prepared you for what comes next?

Not only has my time at university helped me to develop key skills, but it has helped to shape and refine my own view of the wider world, as well as helping me to decide which direction I want my career to head towards.

Is there a message of goodwill you would like to share with the rest of your cohort?

Thank you all for an amazing three years! Despite the current circumstances preventing us from having a proper graduation celebration, I'm sure we can still share our achievements and memories of Warwick through this platform. Good luck in your future endeavours!

What did you enjoy about the Economics Department?

Economics can predict behaviour but never control our response to good & bad times. Econometrics can forecast the statistical impact of variables but never predict the uncertain events of tomorrow. Economic History gives us learning points for our responses but cannot make a decision for us today. Your grades in Economics gives you a good start for the future (hopefully!) but are never the determinants of your future. Do not lose heart in this time of uncertainty. We may not be able to change our environment instantly but you can choose how you want to respond to it with hope and a positive attitude! You have a bright future ahead of you.

Hello to each and every one of you, I have had contact with a lot of your year in the last 3 years and I would like to say its been a pleasure. When you came to Warwick, most of you were straight out of sixth form and for some it was the first time you had lived away from home. How you have grown into adults has been amazing, you are a credit to your parents and all who have had some input into you lives so far. Now, go out into that great big world out there and show them what you have to offer. If you are now done with studying, I hope you get the job you wish. If you are going on with education I hope you have got out of the Warwick experience what you hoped for and it sets you up for the next stage of that education, wherever you may wish to study in the world.

Thank you for choosing Warwick and allowing me to get to know you.

With my very best wishes

Dear Graduates of 2020, Many congratulations to ALL of you on completing your studies and hope you've enjoyed your time at Warwick, particularly with us in Economics, and that your time here will hold for you lots of special memories.

The postponement of 2020 graduation ceremony that you've all been working so hard towards is no doubt disappointing for you being unable to share the special day/moment with your families/closest friends, but hopefully there will be the chance for all or some of you to gather together and celebrate in other ways in the near future.

In my role, it is likely I've not had much interaction with you during your time here, however I wish you ALL the very best in your future careers, work hard at your ambitious goals and life's challenges but remember to take time out to enjoy yourself along the way, and do stay in touch with us.

Again, well done to each and everyone of you and good luck.

Best wishes, Gill

Although I'm sad it's over, and that we didn't quite manage to have the goodbye we all hoped for, I'm excited for what will come next. Thanks to everyone, I will miss you all, and wish everyone the best in the future!

Graduating from University should be a source of pride in the best of times, but to accomplish that in the trying circumstances you have had to face is something to be doubly proud of. The resilience and fortitude shown by the 2020 cohort in reaching graduation is impressive, and every one of this year’s graduates can rightly feel a sense of enormous accomplishment. What are your favourite memories of your time at University?

Singing 'Don't Stop Believin'' at Quackstar Karaoke and managed to get everyone off the seat to dance with us. Cycling from University to Kenilworth with the girls of the Triathlon club, when Jeremy Smith had to explain Difference-in-Difference twice because he saw the puzzled look on my face, running campus tours for prospective students, crying my eyes out at Warwick Arts Centre cafe as my friend listened to my rants about my RAE, and dancing all out on the dance floor at the Economics Finalist Dinner, and getting praises from the staff of the Department afterwards for my dancing, oh and Yannick adding classical music as an introduction to his virtual revision lecture HAHA.

What did you enjoy about the Economics Department?

I finally realised how supportive the Department is in my final year, wish I was brave enough to ask questions (which I thought were dumb) earlier, but better late than never. Special mention to my RAE supervisor, for giving me moral support to do my RAE because my motivation plunged deeply during the pandemic.

What will you miss about University?

The endless opportunities given by this University. I was the Economics student blogger, the WWS student ambassador, became a singer, dancer, actress, swimmer, triathlete, consultant, graphic designer within a span of three years! I'll miss cheering for my friends in the hip hop club as they showcase their dance after class. I will miss my triathlon friends, my lecturers. I will also miss the lecturer and his imaginary dog when simulating 'random walk' in EC226.

In what ways has your time at University prepared you for what comes next?

I believe that life is more than just getting good grades, immerse your time to participate in societies and part time jobs because that's when you get to meet people outside of your circle, learn from them, be a leader. build good communication skills and an open mind, which can be useful as you go on the next chapter of your life.

Is there a message of goodwill you would like to share with the rest of your cohort?

Please enjoy every bit of your time in University. Being all alone by yourself at the start can be daunting, but soon enough you'll find friends you will treasure for life! Spend time communicating with your lecturers, tutors and staff of the Economics Department, and there is no such thing as a stupid question! Just ask away, you're here to learn after all! :)

What are your favourite memories of your time at University?

Drinks at the terrace bar and hour long games at the pool tables, late night Tesco runs during term three directly from the library. Staying up late in friends' flats and getting yelled at by their flatmates after creating a ruckus.

What will you miss about University?

The walks around the occulus and time spent with friends trying to understand certain topics, arguing about who was correct in their approach. Calling for pizzas at the library only to eat them in the stairs outside the library due to the "no food" rule.

In what ways has your time at University prepared you for what comes next?

University has taught me how to deal with failures and shortcomings.

What are your favourite memories of your time at University?

The memory of going to campus on U1 and meeting all the different people that you interacted with during your time at Warwick has been a bit underestimated. But, everything from the library to Leamington Spa, every moment is an unforgettable memory.

What did you enjoy about the Economics Department?

Economics department made me challenge and step out of the comfort zone where I relatively had to do my research to apply the knowledge taught in the lectures with the support from the staff and resources provided online.

What will you miss about University?

Being on campus and going back home to your flat, which was a normal routine but each day turned out to be different from the rest of the other days is what I will miss the most.

In what ways has your time at University prepared you for what comes next?

University prepared me to accept that life will never turn out to be how you wished it to be like. But, it will turn out to be better than that cause you will meet so many different people in your journey that you would not like to have any other way.

Is there a message of goodwill you would like to share with the rest of your cohort?

Thank you for the great time I have had at Warwick which has shaped up a different mindset and has helped me grow into this new person within such a short span. It has given me memories of a lifetime, friends from all corners of the world and place which at the back of heart that will always be home. Thank you Warwick!

What are your favourite memories of your time at University?

My favorite memories include my first week at Warwick which was packed with several social events and activities. Living in Sherbourne to taking the bus to Leamington in the second and third year, hanging out with friends every day in the library cafe, and spending long hours in the library and of course, circling!

What did you enjoy about the Economics Department?

The constant support that I received from the faculty members throughout the year especially for my dissertation. I enjoyed my time attending all the interesting lectures held by the economics department, the economics dinner, and the new common room!

What will you miss about University?

I will miss all the amazing friends I made at university and the wonderful experiences that I had. I will miss all social events such as pop, society events, the balls, and trips. I will definitely miss the amazing SU coffee and hot chocolate that helped me study! Places on campus such as fusion, rootes, T-bar, and busy library floors will never be forgotten.

Is there a message of goodwill you would like to share with the rest of your cohort?

University feels like a warm hug! You come in, not knowing how your next 3 years will look like, and leave in denial of how quick the same 3 years passed. Chatting with friends sitting in the Piazza, long nights in the library, walking to the gym while it snows, the late-night Tesco runs and the long queues at the bus interchange - a life that I might never come back to, but hold so close to my heart. The friends I met on day one have grown into my closest kin while I've made more on the way. After every break, it felt like I was leaving home to come back to my Uni 'home'.

Warwick was also the place where few of my life's major events took place, let it be me starting my entrepreneurial life or exploring my way through art. Every experience at Warwick with friends, societies, and events has chiselled the way I look at life and I take with me memories for a lifetime.

What are your favourite memories of your time at University?

Some of my favourite memories include meeting and becoming friends with people from all over the world, sitting on the Piazza or Oculus Green during the summer, being a student conductor and member of the exec for the University of Warwick Wind Orchestra and spending hours socialising in the Dirty Duck after rehearsals. Also, getting the chance to play music for one of the MTW productions, A Chorus Line!

What did you enjoy about the Economics Department?

Being able to engage with dedicated professors and lecturers and being able to go to the lovely staff in the UG office with even the smallest of problems as they were always happy to help. I also enjoyed attending the socials hosted by the Department and being able to use the common room this year (especially with the addition of the microwave!).

What will you miss about University?

Being part of such a large and diverse cohort of students, the teachers and department staff and the overall experience of being a student, both in terms of the learning and the social side.

In what ways has your time at University prepared you for what comes next?

I believe that University is a last destination where you get to learn the life skills before you embark on your arduous journey as an adult. In university you learn to work independently and manage time, also it allows enough time to explore around different areas and help you to find yourself

I think the main thing I want to say is thank you for making my job so rewarding and enjoyable. Given the pressures young people are under today and the uncertainties of what is to come (your cohort is getting a particularly extravagant set of uncertainties to work with), I am amazed at your ability to attack it with effort and humour. Most lectures, classes, and one-to-one discussions have truly been fun. I say MOST and not ALL as I teach Econometrics and, well, the zero conditional mean assumption just isn’t designed to be fun, is it?! Whatever you choose to do next, just attack it in the way that you already are..

What are your favourite memories of your time at University?

One of my favourite memories from my time at University is taking a break from revision in the summer term to have an iced coffee on the piazza steps with my friends. Another great memory is organising the annual ball for PPE society and seeing it all come together beautifully on the night of the event.

What did you enjoy about the Economics Department?

I really enjoyed the wide range of modules offered and the new common room.

What will you miss about University?

I will miss my friends and the ease with which it was possible to find likeminded and caring people through societies.

In what ways has your time at University prepared you for what comes next?

I believe I have grown as a person and become more mature and aware of the world around me.

Is there a message of goodwill you would like to share with the rest of your cohort?

Thank you to everyone who made my three years at Warwick special and good luck to all of you in your future endeavours.

Warwick has provided me with some of the best memories of my life so far. Without a doubt, the memories made with friends, as well as through Warwick Volunteers, have made my time at Warwick so brilliant and I'm sad, but excited, to end this chapter. The Economics department has been helpful, offering many modules to highlight interest in so many varieties of applied microeconomics. I think my favourites have been through the Economics of Marriage and Neuroeconomics. It's really opened my eyes to applying analytical perspective on any problem and I look forward to using these skills in the future. It's also taught me to be more critical and independent in my reasoning, making me criticise the poor use of statistics regularly while watching the news! The biggest thing I’m going to miss about University is the people, in particular, working and being a part of Warwick Volunteers. I have loved making an impact in the local community. I’ll also miss downtime with friends at the SU pool tables and the general buzz on campus. It will certainly feel strange coming back to campus for the future graduation ceremony! I’d also like to thank all involved for the international opportunities at Warwick. Having the opportunity to take part in the Warwick in Africa and the Warwick Laksh Programme as well as studying abroad in Canada was fantastic. These three international experiences were eye-opening in completely different ways. From the smiles and laughter of students after teaching Pythagoras’ theorem using trees in rural Tanzania to playing cricket and teaching economics in India to learning to Ice skate on frozen lakes in Ontario, Canada. These are memories I’ll never forget! Finally, best of luck to everyone in the class of 2020. Only a small minority can say they have graduated through a global crisis. With all the challenges that has brought, I’ve absolutely no doubt we will continue to push through any other challenge in our way. Thank you Warwick - it's been a pleasure!

Departmental Senior Careers Consultant

Many congratulations to all of you graduating this year. As your Departmental Careers Consultant I normally get involved with your graduation ceremony (showing you to the rights seats and making sure you stay in them) and celebration event, so I was really sad when I removed your graduation date from my Outlook calendar. I will miss having the opportunity to catch up with those of you who I’ve met in guidance appointments and at careers events over the past few years and hearing about what you will be doing after completing your degree.

I really value it when graduates get involved with supporting current students through mentoring, LinkedIn conversations or participating in careers events. Do stay involved with Warwick Economics if you can, stay in touch and come back and see us when we are able to be on campus again.

As alumni of Warwick’s Economics department you should be very proud of your achievements and I hope that you are all able to realise personal career success in the future. “Farewell”, and to quote a character from one of my favourite films, “Be good!” (You’ll only get this if you remember my introductory careers session in 2017.)

Director of Student Engagement and Progression

When we started this academic year back in October 2019, it seemed like a normal year like all the others, but it will no doubt be remembered as being very different. There is never a good time for a global pandemic, but I’m very sorry it had to happen in your final year of your undergraduate degree. It is fortunate that modern technology has permitted some sort of normality by allowing us to stay in touch virtually. I can only imagine what this would have been like without smart phones or the internet. I sincerely hope that at least some good things have come out of this which you can use in a positive way in the future.

As I reflect on my first year in my role as Director of Student Engagement and Progression, the one thing which stands out over anything else is the hard work and dedication of our student reps at the SSLC. As the years have gone by, the SSLC has been given an ever more central role in the strategic development of department policies, and its influence is reflected everywhere. The most obvious marker of its achievement is the common room which was completed this year. The SSLC has been instrumental in ensuring its completion and has given frequent feedback, which has been helpful in terms of making it a success. This year, the SSLC introduced two new special roles; a rep for female students and a rep for overseas students. This is part of the committee’s ongoing work to further develop gender and diversity initiatives for a modern economics department.

I would like to thank the Chair Dimitris Apostolopoulos and the Deputy Chairs Carolina Buarque and Shreya Thummar for their dedication in their respective roles. Their leadership has helped make the SSLC more effective, and their enthusiasm has not only created a positive experience but has also been an inspiration to other reps.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for having chosen Warwick for your undergraduate degree, and wish you all the best in the future. Please do stay in touch with us.

Too many to choose from! But freshers and nights out in first year, representing the Warwick Pool Team at BUCS competitions, and floor 5 in the Library probably make the top of the lot.

What will you miss about University?

Most definitely the 'bubble' aspect of Warwick University - always bumping into friends and easily making new ones.

Is there a message of goodwill you would like to share with the rest of your cohort?

Many great memories with my flatmates and friends, representing the table tennis club at BUCS competitions and dancing at Warwick Does Strictly for charity.

What did you enjoy about the Economics Department?

What are your favourite memories of your time at University?

There really are too many memories to list. Some to share and some to keep for yourself. It was like a spiritual journey for me.

What did you enjoy about the Economics Department?

The modules were engaging and the staff were very attentive. During my three years of university, I could really see how the depart was trying to improve its services and provide a better learning experience. If you look for one, there is pretty much support available in all areas, both academically and nonacademically. You just have to reach out for it.

What will you miss about University?

I really enjoy the Autumn term in each year, when everyone has hopes and high expectations for the year. Making various plans, and enjoying more social activities with my friends. Also, the Summer term, the small study sessions with your friends, there is a sense of camaraderie in everyone trying to help each other out, since there is no direct competition.

In what ways has your time at University prepared you for what comes next?

I believe that University is a last destination where you get to learn the life skills before you embark on your arduous journey as an adult. In university you learn to work independently and manage time, also it allows enough time to explore around different areas and help you to find yourself.

Is there a message of goodwill you would like to share with the rest of your cohort?

I wish everyone the best of luck!

Breathe, relax and enjoy this time. You’ll have plenty of time to look for jobs. But this summer break will possibly be one of the last opportunities to enjoy long periods of uninterrupted breaks in your life. Be a little bit creative under the current circumstances but enjoy it. Let your imagination run wild and colour the sky purple or some other extra-ordinarily bold colour. Don’t let what job offer you have (if you have any) or don’t have ruin this time. At the end of the day, these things should not define you, don’t let them. Trust me. I learned the hard way. Remember, one thing you have is time. So, you can think of all these mundane stuffs later. You can make plenty of mistakes and will have more than enough time to recover from it. But this time, this youthful vigour, it’s here for a short while. At the moment, just enjoy this summer. Also, be rest assured, whatever you do in life, you’ll be fine. After all, you are a Warwick graduate. Remember this too.
