Ameena Gafoor In Memoriam
On behalf of the Yesu Persaud Centre for Caribbean Studies (YPCCS) at the University of Warwick in the UK, we would like to pay our respects to Dr Ameena Gafoor following her recent passing. The role of Dr Gafoor in furthering the study of Indo-Caribbean indentureship has been invaluable. For our part, this began in 2017 with a major conference to mark the centenary of the abolition of indentureship in the British Empire, which was organised in collaboration with the University of London, the Institute for Commonwealth Studies, and the Gafoor Foundation. Thanks to further generous funding from the Gafoor Foundation the YPCCS then established an annual lecture series, named in Dr Gafoor's honour, which has seen an array of speakers give public lectures on the history and legacies of indentureship. These include Professors Tina K. Ramnarine, Clem Seecharan, Gaiutra Bahadur and Patricia Mohammed, and most recently, the filmmaker Arlen Harris and the former President of Guyana Donald Ramotar. We in the YPCSS are indebted to Dr Gafoor's support for Caribbean scholarship and send our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.
