County Durham

The Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle

They say 'A French château in the vibrant market town of Barnard Castle in the midst of Teesdale, housing outstanding collections of European fine and decorative art.'

 

Oriental Museum, Durham

The Oriental Museum is the only museum in the North of Britain devoted entirely to the art and archaeology of the Orient. Our Chinese and Egyptian collections are among the finest to be found anywhere in Britain.


Northumberland

Berwick Museum and Art Gallery

They say 'Discover the characters, nooks and crannies of old Berwick as you explore a fascinating recreation of the old town. Learn about its turbulent Middle Ages and then enjoy the stunning ceramics and artistic masterpieces from the magnificent Burrell Collection.'

 

Corbridge Museum

They say 'here you can walk around the streets of what was once an active Roman Town. Inside the Museum see a fascinating new display which shows one of the most significant finds in Roman history.'

 

Great North Museum: Hancock

The Great North Museum incorporates collections from the Hancock Museum and Newcastle University’s Museum of Antiquities, the Shefton Museum and the Hatton Gallery.


Tyne and Wear

Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums

They say 'We manage a collection of nine museums and galleries across Tyneside and the Archives for Tyne and Wear. We are supported by the five local authorities of the area and Newcastle University.'

 

Arbeia Roman Fort

They say 'Standing above the entrance to the River Tyne, Arbeia Roman Fort guarded the main sea route to Hadrian's Wall. It was a key garrison and military supply base to other forts along the Wall and is an important part of the history of Roman Britain.'

 

Discovery Museum

They say 'Immerse yourself in the history of Newcastle and Tyneside told through permanent displays and temporary exhibitions over three floors focusing on the area's martime, scientific and technological importance to Britain and the rest of the world.'

 

Great North Museum: Hancock

They say 'The collections in the museum belong to the Natural History Society of Northumbria (NHSN), the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne (SANT) and the Shefton collection of Greek and Etruscan objects was bequeathed by the late Professor Brian Shefton.

 

Laing Art Gallery

They say 'The gallery today is home to an internationally important collection of art, focusing on British oil paintings, watercolours, ceramics, silver and glassware.'

 

Segedunum Roman Fort

They say 'Today, Segedunum is once again a major site on Hadrian's Wall. It is the most excavated fort along the Wall with surviving foundations of many buildings and part of the Wall itself.

 

South Shields Museum & Art Gallery

They say 'The museum is spread over two floors telling the story of the borough's social, industrial and maritime history from 4,000 years ago to the present day through a range of displays, exhibitions and nationally significant works of art.'
