The medical department of the Pump Rooms was staffed by physiotherapists, hydrotherapy assistants, clerical assistants, engineers, cleaners, and laundry workers. Anne Golland became chief physiotherapist in 1965 and her deputy, Jack Reilly, was appointed in 1966. The medical department appears to have been a busy place, treating a steady stream of patients. Working conditions were not ideal: the fabric of the building needed constant attention, working in high temperatures in and around the pool could be uncomfortable, and lifting patients could lead to staff injuring themselves. Despite this, the department's physiotherapists and hydrotherapy assistants did ther best to provide each patient with a specific course of treatment tailored to their needs.
