Steward’s accounts of hospital business from 1631

Warwickshire County Record Office, CR1600/LH42/1

Despite the supposed infirmities and poverty of the brethren who were admitted to the Lord Leycester, evidence from the hospital’s financial accounts, suggests that many lived active and busy lives. The financial records, like the one below, show that many brethren possessed high levels of literacy and basic accounting skills.

Brothers Francis Whetstone and Thomas Jemeway undertook multiple journeys to London and to the Lord Leycester's estates in Warwickshire in 1631. Such trips would have been demanding, involving long rides on horseback. Jemeway appears to have stayed in London for twenty-six days during one of these visits. .
