About the Early Modern Forum

The Early Modern Forum, supported from 2011-13 by an AHRC network grant, aimed to establish an international network of scholars working on all aspects of early modern studies and to encourage discussion between both members of staff and postgraduate students, who would thus be able to pursue research themes and discussions with colleagues whom they might only infrequently meet physically.

  • The Forum linked the lively research communities of Warwick University (UK) with that of the Sorbonne (France), as well as with centres of early modern expertise in the US including Vanderbilt, Boston, The Huntington Library, University of Southern California and Yale.
  • By exploiting existing Virtual Research Environment (VRE) technologies, it facilitated research interactions (and digital outputs) while investigating which technologies best support international research collaboration.
  • Rather than adding a new corpus of material, the Forum exploited the masses of material already available digitally, both to add to existing research and potentially to produce commentaries on primary source material for digital publication.
  • The project aimed to expand to involve other European partners in Italy, Germany and elsewhere.

After the end of the AHRC grant, the project continued to offer a range of events at Warwick and elsewhere, until it merged formally with the Eighteeth Century Centre at Warwick in 2017.
