Korean 2 for Language Degree Students (LL2C9)

Summary

Level

This module is offered to language degree students with good basic knowledge of Korean (GCSE level or equivalent).

Main Objectives
  • To understand and communicate in familiar and routine situations, using frequently used expressions;
  • To develop strategies for language learning; and
  • To work towards/achieve A2 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference)

Teaching and Learning

Two weekly blended sessions for 21 weeks, organised as:

  • a two-hour synchronous classes: face-to-face on campus

  • a one-hour culture synchronous session: online in Microsoft Teams
  • homework & independent study

If health & safety restrictions are required, teaching may move online. 

Students are reminded that 1 credit = 10 hours of study, therefore for a 30 credit module, the minimum expected amount of study is 300 hours, which averages over 10 hours per week. A substantial amount of independent study is therefore required. Students can make use of Moodle to facilitate this.

Assessment

Term 1: one interim test (10%)

Term 3: one reading/writing test (50%) + one speaking test (40%)

Course Description

In this module students will learn and reinforce the basics of the Korean language. This module will also offer students opportunities to improve their communicative competence in Korean.

Successful completion of Korean 2 qualifies students to progress to Korean 3.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Use vocabulary and expressions appropriately
  • Communicate on familiar topics and activities
  • Write simple texts, messages and emails using correct language
  • Understand spoken language in the area of immediate personal relevance
  • Understand texts dealing with descriptions of events and feelings
  • Apply a basic knowledge of grammar

By the end of the course, students should be able to perform at Level A2 Basic user (waystage) of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) or close to that level.

Syllabus

The syllabus will include the following:

Communicative situations

This module will consolidate the fundamental aspects of Korean grammar and essential basic structures, enabling students to function in a variety of everyday situations.

Grammar content

Students will learn to form practical sentences, ranging from simple to more complex structures, commonly used in everyday life.
