Poet's comments
People often know about the battles of the two World Wars but they don't know about Arsuf or Acre, two of the battles of the Crusades. I didn't know much until I started reading about it and then realised that the military leaders in these battles were unusual, I don't know of many historic figures who had such a contradictory relationship. I believe that Richard and Saladin were two of the most interesting military leaders in the history of war because of this, who else in history has helped his enemy in the way that Saladin did? I can't imagine Churchill sending his doctor to help Hitler. This is why I wrote it as a conversation as it was interesting to imagine how they would have spoken to each other. I really enjoy poetry and medieval history and this gave me a chance to combine both. (Tom Fox)
