Dr Ania Crowther

MA in Renaissance Studies from Birkbeck College, University of London, BA in Film and Literature, University of Warwick.

Ania has taught theatre history from 5th-21st centuries. She has lectured at Warwick (EN302, EN228), East 15 School of Acting (Contextual Studies, Theatre History) and the British American Drama Academy (Shakespeare’s Comedies and Histories).

Having taken a break from teaching and research following graduation to focus on family, and work as an editor and proofreader for an academic press, Ania remains interested in playscript editing and adaptation.

She is editing Margaret Cavendish’s play, Youth’s Glory and Death’s Banquet, for Punctum Books as part of the Complete Works of Margaret Cavendish project.

She is also engaged with expanding the scope of her thesis on Restoration adaptations of the plays of James Shirley into a monograph on adaptations of several key Jacobean and Caroline playwrights including Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher. She is particularly interested in female roles in light of women’s inclusion in the professional theatre companies from 1661.

She will be giving a paper on Aphra Behn’s use of material from James Shirley’s The Lady of Pleasure in her 1686 play, The Lucky Chance, at the upcoming conference, ‘How to do things with early modern words’ at Loughborough University in July 2022.
