Portinari, Tommaso di Folco 1428-1501

Career: Partner in the branch of the Medici bank established in Bruges for trading with England, 1463-4. Manager and partner of the Bruges branch and directing partner of the London branch, 1465. Once the controlling hand of Piero de’ Medici was gone, P indulged in extravagant loans to his princely associates, which ruined the bank. Adviser to Philip the Good and Charles the Bold, at whose court he acted as Lorenzo’s personal representative. His mercantile activities covered a very wide field and contributed in no small part to the Burgundian economy. He lost vast sums to both Charles and to Maximilian von Habsburg and, by his thoughtless munificence, helped towards the collapse of the Medicean banking system. In Aug 1480 he unwillingly took over the Bruges branch completely. In 1481 Lorenzo sold the Bruges branch to him with all its liabilities and potential assets for 16,616 fl. In 1489-90 he was in London with Cristofano Spini to negotiate a commercial treaty between England and Florence and the setting up of a wool staple in Pisa. Consul in Bruges several times. Having arrived in Bruges at the age of twelve, he had become completely immersed in the Burgundian way of life and, unlike other Medici factors, he had no wish to return to Florence as a senior partner. Between 1498 and his death in 1501 he lived in Florence and filled various public offices. His artistic commissions included portraits of himself and his wife Maria Bandini-Baroncelli by Memling, and the Van der Goes ‘Adoration of the shepherds’ (Uffizi) for the hospital of S Maria Nuova.
