Annual General Meeting

Annual General Meeting 2024

2024 marks the twentieth anniversary of the Society for Neo-Latin Studies (SNLS). In order to celebrate this milestone, the Annual General Meeting Day will be held in Cambridge, as this is where the Society was founded; and it will have a slightly different structure.

All events will take place at Trinity College Cambridge (Cambridge CB2 1TQ) on Friday, 15 November 2024. The programme will start with a tour of the Wren Library (12 noon; meet at Wren Library), followed by a ‘roundtable’ discussion, which replaces the standard Annual Lecture (2.00 pm, Old Combination Room), and the 2024 AGM (4.00 pm, Old Combination Room).

Anyone who would like to attend the library tour, the ‘roundtable’ discussion and / or the AGM should register by 11 November 2024, so that Trinity College can be informed about expected numbers. Please register here.

Between the library tour and ‘roundtable’ discussion there will be the chance to have lunch in town (on a self-paying basis), and there will be a tea break in Trinity College between the ‘roundtable’ discussion and the AGM, so that there is also the opportunity for members attending to catch up informally with each other.

See the full programme here.

Annual General Meeting 2023

This year's Annual General Meeting

will take place on

Friday, 17 November 2023

The 2023 AGM (3.00 pm) and Annual Lecture (5.00 pm) will take place in Swedenborg House in London (20–21 Bloomsbury Way, London WC1A 2TH) on Friday, 17 November 2023.

Anyone who would like to attend the AGM and / or the Annual Lecture should register by 13 November 2023 here.

The fact that this year the AGM and the Annual Lecture will once more be in person means that there will again be the chance to get together informally afterwards over dinner at a local restaurant (on a self-paying basis). Anyone who would like to stay for dinner should note this on the AGM registration form (and indicate their menu choices in the comments section) also by 13 November 2023, as the restaurant would like to know numbers in advance and has asked for pre-ordering for a group of this size (Spaghetti House: https://www.spaghettihouse.co.uk/menu/).

In advance of the AGM there will be the chance to join the event ‘Rhyme, But No Reason? Latin and English Fun in the Early Modern Period’, organized in the context of this year’s Being Human’ Festival, in Senate House Library (details here: https://www.beinghumanfestival.org/events/rhyme-no-reason-latin-and-english-fun-early-modern-period).

Annual General Meeting 2022

This year's Annual General Meeting

will take place on

Thursday, 17 November 2022

The 2022 Annual Lecture and AGM will take place on Thursday, 17 November 2022, at Scottish House in London, in connection with a conference to celebrate 400 years since the death of John Barclay (author of the Argenis), organized under the auspices of SNLS and the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Neo-Latin Studies in Innsbruck (full programme available here.) The Annual Lecture will be delivered by Stefan Tilg on ‘Barclay and the roman-à-clef: his relation to the tradition and his impact’ (4.00-5.15 pm). The Lecture will be followed by the AGM (5.30-6.30 pm). See the column on the right for the full programme.

Anyone who would like to attend the AGM, should register by 14 November 2022 here. Anyone who would like to attend the Annual Lecture (or other sessions of the conference) should email one of the conference organizers, Florian Schaffenrath, at Florian.Schaffenrath@neolatin.lgb.ac.at by the same date.

The fact that this year the Annual Lecture and the AGM return to an in-person setting means that there will again be the chance to get together informally afterwards over dinner at a local restaurant (on a self-paying basis). Anyone who would like to stay for dinner should indicate this on the AGM registration form, so that there is an indication of numbers for the purposes of booking space in a restaurant.

will take place on

Friday, 19 November 2021

online via Zoom

The 2021 AGM (3pm) and Annual Lecture (5pm) will take place on Friday, 19 November 2021, online via Zoom.

Anyone who would like to attend, should register by 16 November 2020 at https://warwick.ac.uk/fac/arts/ren/snls/news/agm/registration2021. Then you will be sent the necessary Zoom links shortly before the meeting (one for the AGM, only open to members, and one for the Annual Lecture, open to a wider audience).

The online setting, unfortunately, means that the Annual Lecture will not be followed by dinner at a local restaurant, as usual; but the Zoom session will remain open after the Lecture for a little while, to give people the chance to chat to each other informally.

The Annual Lecture will be given by Jan Bloemendal and will be titled "Erasmus as a Theologian and a Paraphraser: A Comparison of the Paraphrase on Luke and the Paraphrase on John"

Abstract: As is known, the Gospels of Luke and John are quite different. Luke is more narrative, John more theological; each one has a different understanding of Jesus, that is: the Healer among his people and the Invincible Son of God. These differing concepts prompt us to ask ourselves if and how the overall difference between the two gospels is reflected in Erasmus's paraphrases of them. Erasmus considered his Paraphrases his most important work, so, if we also take into account the Annotations on these two gospels, answers to this question may help us to have a more refined understanding of Erasmus as a theologian and a Christian.

Annual General Meeting 2015

The Annual General Meeting this year will take place

at the

Inns of Court on 27 November 2015, 3 p.m.

(Sherrard Room, 3rd floor of the Ashley Building)

The Annual Lecture will be given by Hugh Adlington (Birmingham), entitled

John Donne’s Latin Books: 'Per Rachel ho seruito & non per Lea'

which will include a look at some material in the Middle Temple Library (4.30-6.30pm).

This lecture explores the kinds of Latin books owned by poet and preacher John Donne (1572-1631) and the uses he made of them in his writing. The Italian motto that Donne inscribed in his books – from Petrarch, derived from Genesis 29: 25 – is thought to refer to the medieval symbolism whereby Rachel represented the contemplative life and Leah the active. But how tenable is this distinction when considering Donne’s diverse use of his Latin books across the full range of his activities, as satirist, love poet, lawyer, polemicist, diplomat, churchman and judge at law? And what can the surviving physical, literary and biographical evidence tell us about the influence of Donne’s study of Latin books on his thought and writing?

To accompany the lecture, the Middle Temple Library has kindly agreed to display a selection of Latin books from Donne’s collection.

The winner of the SNLS Early/Career Essay prize will also be announced at the meeting.

The meeting will be preceded by a special lunchtime session of the Neo-Latin reading group, organised by Victoria Moul.
