Applying for PhD Research

Candidates for the degree of PhD in the Centre for Cultural and Media Policy Studies will need to demonstrate a record of strong academic achievement and an aptitude for research. The minimum requirement is an upper second class undergraduate degree in a relevant subject, a strong performance in a relevant subject at MA level or demonstrable equivalent professional experience. In addition, candidates will need to produce a clearly articulated research proposal.

If you think you can meet these requirements, then first of all you should submit your application to the Centre, by following the application procedure set out below.

For any queries about the application process, please contact Dr David Wright at D.Wright.3@warwick.ac.uk.

Application procedure:

Please follow this procedure carefully. Failure to do so is likely to affect your proposed start date and any applications for University Scholarships.

STEP ONE:

In the first instance, you should identify a member of staff whose research interests and expertise are within the general area your proposed project intends to explore, and who you think would be in a good position to act as your supervisor. Staff interests and experiences are listed on the staff pages.

Please note that it is not necessary to contact a potential supervisor befor completing STEP TWO below, although you may of course do so if you have a query about their research interests. We will not normally be in a position to indicate whether or not a member of staff is able to supervise you until you have completed STEP TWO.

STEP TWO:

Fill in the enquiry form, identifying your potential supervisor, and including a research proposal, cover letter and CV.

The research proposal should articulate your research questions and proposed methodology; it should contain a brief literature review and position your project within your chosen area.

You can find some guidance on writing a research proposal via the UNiversity's application advice page, here.

Your proposal should be no longer than 1500 words.

Your cover letter should contain a statement as to why you think the Centre is the ideal place for you to conduct your research

STEP THREE:

Your nominated supervisor(s) will consider your completed enquiry form, research proposal and CV. If a nominated supervisor thinks that s/he may be able to supervise your project, you will be invited to make a full application to for admission to the University. If not, you will be informed by the Centre's Director of Graduate Studies.

STEP FOUR

(for those invited to submit a full application): Your full application will be considered by your potential supervisor. If the supervisor wishes to proceed to the next stage, you will normally be invited for interview. For candidates from overseas this may be conducted on-line or by phone.

If both the supervisors and candidate are satisfied at this stage, and if you meet the formal criteria for entry, the University will make you a formal offer. If not, you will be informed by the Centre's Director of Graduate Studies.

Formal offers will not be issued without satisfactory references and, for students whose first language is not English, evidence of meeting our language requirements (a IELTS score of 7.0, or equivalnet achived within two years of their proposed start date).
