MA in Creative and Media Enterprises

Dead Copyright by Antonio Roberts

Degree Overview

The MA in Creative and Media Enterprises focuses on the special relationship between creative imagination, strategic management and cultural entrepreneurship. The course invites you to deepen your knowledge of the creative and media industries and to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to commercialise your ideas and manage your own creative project, team or business.

This course is designed to develop you intellectually as well as enhance your professional skills. You will critically reflect on the theories and ideas that shape creative and managerial practices and explore the implications that intellectual property, changing business practices and markets hold for creative and media enterprises operating in an emerging creative economy. Through theoretical analysis and practical tasks, you will have an opportunity to reflect on the ideas that lie behind your work and prepare you for the challenges of running a creative or media business.

This course will enable you to:

  • Acquire a critical overview of the commercial, legal and cultural frameworks within which creative and media enterprises operate.
  • Explore the tension between creativity and organisation in creative and media enterprises from both a theoretical and practice-based perspective.
  • Consider new perspectives and ideas through research, teamwork, and engagement with industry practices and debates.
  • Develop an enterprise: this may be from an existing practice in terms of product, process or service, or a new venture.
  • Enhance your applied knowledge by engaging with industry professionals.
  • Develop your own approaches to organisation, strategic planning and marketing.
  • Build your confidence and the strategic thinking and communication skills necessary to work in different areas of business and at different levels of operation in the creative and media industries.

Turn creative ideas into a successful business...

In the creative economy, ideas are cheap – it’s what you do with them that counts. Whether you are a recent arts graduate, a budding entrepreneur or a seasoned media professional, this course aims to help you to tackle the real challenges of running a small creative business.

Develop your strategic thinking skills...

Our students come from all over the world and have interests in film, music, TV, digital media, publishing, and beyond. We encourage you to think strategically and conceptually, focusing not just on the specific challenges of one industry but on the broader strategic issues behind them.

Learn to manage creativity...

This is not a standard business degree, nor is it a programme in applied cultural or media studies. It was formed out of a conviction that for many small creative and media enterprises, the conventional management models and tools no longer apply. Rather than seeing management and creativity as opposites, we see them as complementary.

Join an ongoing project to develop new ideas...

When you come to study here we hope you will discover a creative approach to management and a managed approach to creativity which can transfer to different scenarios and industries. We want the ideas and knowledge you encounter here to grow with you so you can apply a flexible and adaptable approach throughout your career.
