Outreach: The importance of life beyond the classroom

This session will offer a perspective on how growing up in challenging circumstances shapes the outlook and perspectives of our young people. What does deprivation in modern Britain look like and feel like for many children? How does it shape their life chances? As university teaching staff, are we aware of the struggles (and successes) experienced by young people who often live a "stone's throw" from our place of work?

This session may not definitively answer all of these questions, but it will certainly explore them. After many years promoting Chemistry to young people on behalf of Warwick University and the Royal Society of Chemistry, Nick Barker is now based in a primary school serving an area of severe social deprivation and is a member of the University’s Strategy Group. He will offer a unique perspective on the lives and experiences of economically deprived communities in modern Britain.
