Eligibility to apply through APP EXP

  • It is necessary to have a minimum of 6 months until the end of your employment contract with the University of Warwick at the point of joining APP EXP.
  • The whole APP EXP application process, including assessment and administration, need to be completed during your employment at the University.
  • People with an Honorary position at Warwick are generally not eligible for the pathway (please contact appexp@warwick.ac.uk to check).

This table below is intended to provide further help for you to decide whether you are eligible to apply through APP EXP, and if so for which category.

Staff category
Guidance

Teaching focused

APP EXP is suitable for teaching focussed academic staff at different career stages.

Research and Teaching focused

With the exception of staff with APP TE as a probationary requirement (see below) APP EXP is suitable for R and T focused staff.

Assistant professors (R and T) with FHEA / APPTE as probationary requirement

Participant will apply through APP TE (some participants with suitable experience may wish to apply for partial exemption from APP TE, which if approved would enable participants to FHEA through APP EXP).

Research focused staff (R)

APP EXP is suitable for research focused staff who have appropriate teaching/learning support opportunities. The nature of these opportunities will determine the most suitable category to apply for.

Post-doctoral research staff (currently employed fixed term through a research grant)

Support is available to work towards Associate Fellow. Post-doc staff would generally apply for AFHEA due to the limited breadth of their teaching and learning related activity. Occasionally participants may have appropriate prior experience of teaching and learning in HE, in which case approval to apply for Fellowship should be gained (please email appexp@warwick.ac.uk to discuss).

Postgraduate students who teach

APP PGR is often the most appropriate choice for PGR students who teach to gain Associate Fellowship. In some circumstance APP EXP may be suitable but please bear in mind that APP EXP is only able to support PGRs who teach to apply for Associate Fellowship (D1) due to the type of experiences available to PGRs. (Very occasionally a PGR who has prior experience of teaching and learning support in HE might be eligible to apply for Fellowship. Honorary positions (Not employed by the University)

Those in this position are not eligible to apply for professional recognition through the APP pathways with ADC.

Staff in teaching and learning related professional services roles

Professional services staff can apply through APP EXP if they have teaching and/or learning experience appropriate for the category of Fellowship they apply for. Many professional services staff have successfully applied through APP EXP in the past but it is important to explore the appropriateness of experience and category of Fellowship at the start of the process.
