CAPITAL Centre Research and Development: The Hamlet Project

Duration of Project18 weeks in the autumn and spring terms, with the option of further work towards a performance in the summer term which will be scheduled sympathetically to take account of the students’ examinations.  Who should apply?Tom is looking for a diverse group of 12-14 people to collaborate with him on this project. Applications are welcome from all ages and areas of study. Commitment to a three-hour session every Monday evening in term-time is required, and there will be research and preparation for each session. Anyone wanting to participate should email Tom at tomcornford@googlemail.com by the evening of Friday 3rd Oct, briefly stating the reason for their interest and relevant experience and be prepared to come to an initial meeting from 6-7pm on Monday 6th Oct at The CAPITAL Centre. What skills or experience are required? You do not need to be an actor to sign up. I will be assigning students particular areas of expertise and responsibility, so designers, musicians, technicians, actors, dramaturgs, painters, sound designers, dancers and writers will all find their place within the team as will those with interest but no particular preference. There will be a certain amount of movement work which will necessitate reasonable general fitness and flexibility.  What will you get out of it?o        A thorough grounding in Tom’s working method (for actors and directors), which he has adapted from his engagement with a number of significant practitioners working today (including Mike Alfreds and Katie Mitchell) and which he teaches regularly at The Actor’s Centre in London and The Guthrie Theater/University of Minneapolis;o        an intimate knowledge of the greatest play ever written;o        an intimate knowledge of the work of some of the last century’s greatest theatre-makers, not to mention the cinema’s greatest poet;o        the experience of practical and creative engagement with literature and ideas; o        an array of ‘transferable skills’, including experience of both leading and working in a team, time-management and the ability to communicate succinctly and engagingly in person and on paper;o        enhanced humanity. Lastly, The CAPITAL Centre will officially recognise participation in this project for those wishing to include it on their CVs and it will be possible for students reading English who are working on this project to fashion their contribution into material that can be submitted as the written assessment for EN301 and/or European Theatre.
