Directing the Image: Call for Participants

Andy Williams is Head of Graphic Design at the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) and Fellow in Creativity and performance at the Capital Centre October-December 2008.   This term he will be leading a short project on creating and directing a Shakespeare-inspired image.

Working initially with Carol Rutter (Director of the Capital Centre) to discuss short passages of text from A Midsummer Night's Dream and look at some film footage for inspiration, the project will explore the creation of an image through discussion and practical implementation - a process of conversion from text into image that simulates the way a theatre director puts a production onto the stage. The project isn't about technique and achieving a highly technically accomplished finished piece; it's about creative thinking and experiencing the processes involved in making an image. The project will culminate with an exhibition in the Capital Centre. Andy is looking for 10-15 students to collaborate on this project. Applications are welcome from all abilities, ages and study backgrounds. A commitment will be required for additional self-directed creative work between sessions 1 and 3, approximately 10 hours in total.  Anyone wishing to participate should email  A.Williams@warwick.ac.uk by end of day Monday 20 October 2008. Please briefly state the reason for interest and any relevant experience and qualifications.

The Great Shakespeare Debate

For the last two years the CAPITAL Centre has collaborated with the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and the English-Speaking Union to support the Great Shakespeare Debate, an opportunity for school students throughout the UK to engage with Shakespeare.  Warwick students have taken part as mentors, judges and ambassadors for the University. This year we are looking for 8 undergraduates to help with
  • the first round debates which will take place at Warwick on Friday November 7
  • the second round debates which will be held in Stratford-upon-Avon on 4-5 March. This will involve an overnight stay in Stratford with accommodation, travel costs, a per diem and a theatre ticket provided.
No previous experience of debating is required and training will be provided, though a good acquaintance with Shakespeare's works and an enthusiasm for working with young people are essesntial. The Trust is also looking for up to 24 students to help with a similar project involving year 10 students from Sandwell and Dudley. This will involve a half day’s training in Stratford on 30 January and one day’s mentoring in Stratford in the week  of 2 February.  Please contact Susan Brock, CAPITAL Centre, Millburn House G03.s.l.brock@warwick.ac.uk  02476 150067 for further information. Deadline for final applications is 20 October 2008.
