Reinterpreting Hamlet

Reinterpreting Hamlet

This project re-interpreted the idea of gender in Hamlet and presented the audience with an alternative vision of Shakespeare, challenging stereotypes and encouraging stimulating gender-based debate.

The cast ran a series of workshop-based rehearsals in which they stripped scenes down to the bare minimum and experimented with costume and locations. The cast used their findings as the basis of a stimulating showcase event and group discussion on gender roles in Shakespeare.

The project was highly relevant to students studying Shakespeare modules and provided stimulus for gender-based debate among the wider public.
Academically it complemented third year modules EN337 Shakespeare from Page to Stage to Page and EN301 Shakespeare and Selected Dramatists of his Time.
