The CAPITAL CENTRE is a unique initiative that builds on existing excellence in which the arts of creative thinking are developed through forms of teaching and learning that emphasise active performance on the part of both teachers and students. The initial focus of the Centre was within the Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies and the School of Theatre, Performance and Cultural Policy Studies

A key objective of the Centre is to draw in expertise and excellence from departments across the University, in order to share experience and disseminate creative practice widely throughout the University and beyond. We work with

The Centre offers a shared space—both physical and conceptual—for teachers, students and practitioners (writers, actors, directors, others in the creative industries) to come together and inform each other’s work. Linking theory with practice, this unique programme allows for concentrated and innovative inquiry into, and embodiment of, the roles of creativity and performance in teaching and learning.

The particular focus of many members of the Centre will be performance in the theatrical sense—for instance, the development of acting and other stage skills, performance aesthetics, theatre history, performance in the 21^st Century, Shakespeare as a theatre writer, writing for performance, theatre and new media, theatre as a research medium, theatre and education, and theatre and business—but the Centre is committed to a much broader understanding of the nature and practice of performance, and its relation to creative thinking. It is a hub for a diverse body of innovative thinking and practice in teaching and learning.
