The Oedipus Project
The Oedipus Project was run in Autumn 2007 and Spring 2008 by CAPITAL Artist in Residence Donnacadh O'Briain, formerly Assistant Director at the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Working with a group of staff and students drawn from across the university, the aim is to develop a theatre piece based on the Oedipus myth, placing Oedipus in a purgatorial, Samuel Beckett-inspired landscape where he is forced to re-play the sins (mistakes?) of his life. Working practically under workshop/rehearsal conditions in the studio space at the CAPITAL Centre, Donnacadh will take various approaches to creating and devising the performance piece, and will employ diverse theatrical styles, leading the project to create (from the bare bones of the surviving myth and its earlier re-tellings) new ideas, images, characters, story structure and text. Ultimately, the project will produce a work-in-progress showing.
