The Orestes Project

The Orestes Project was a three-day project exploring themes from Aeschylus' Oresteia and their translation into modern theatre poetry.

The workshops ran from November 5th to 7th 2007 and were led by the director Andrew Visnevski (Young Vic; founder of the legendary Cherub Theatre) and the acclaimed performance poet Joseph Coelho (author of a new adaptation of the Oresteia).

Within the Project, Andrew explored the concept of myth in contemporary theatre, and Joseph lead a workshop on creating original poetry and drama in response to classic texts: Does a modern audience seek "myth" in theatre or an immediately recognisable "reality"? How does classical tragedy translate into the events of today and the language that we speak?
