Pedro de Mendonça

As an undergraduate I studied Economics at the Faculty of Economics (FE), New University of Lisbon (UNL). From there I went to the Technical University of Lisbon (UTL) to engage in post graduate study at the School of Economics and Management (ISEG). There I concluded my masters thesis under the supervision of Miguel St. Aubyn at the Research Unit on Complexity and Economics (UECE), where my first steps on the issue of complexity were given.

I am concluding my thesis with Prof. Robert Mackay (Warwick Mathematics Institute) on the topics of nonlinear dynamics, bifurcations and differential games in economics. I am co-supervised by Prof. Christophe Deissenberg (GRECAM). The thesis title is "Nonlinear and Evolutionary Phenomena in Deterministic Growing Economies" and the latest versions of each of the chapters can be found below.

My research interests range a large number of subjects on economics and complexity, with a special focus on Complex Systems and Complexity Economics, Economic Growth, Nonlinear Macrodynamics, Differential Games, Optimal Control, Multi-Objective Optimization under Uncertainty (applying stochastic processes and game theory to solve co-evolutionary optimization problems with incomplete information).

Current Projects:

  • Nonlinear Phenomena in a Growing Economy with Convex Adjustment Costs

Mendonça, Pedro, "Nonlinear Phenomena in a Growing Economy with Convex Adjustment Costs", February 2014

Routines and data for this paper can be found here (C routines requiring GSL to compile, Matlab, Mathematica and Eviews files).

  • Optimal Beliefs and Self-Confirming Equilibrium in a Class of Differential Games with Economic Applications

Mendonça, Pedro, "Optimal Beliefs and Self-Confirming Equilibrium in a Class of Differential Games with Economic Applications", March 2013

Routines for this paper can be found here (Matlab routines)

  • Subjective Beliefs and Unintended Consequences in a Class of Differential Games with Economic Applications

Mendonça, Pedro, "Subjective Beliefs and Unintended Consequences in a Class of Differential Games with Economic Applications", March 2013

Routines for this paper can be found here (Matlab routines).

Other Projects

  • Birth-Death Processes with Two Dimensional Diffusion: Applications to Population and Economic Dynamics (Under Revision)

This project originates from my collaboration with Ellak Somfai on spatially extended system with applications to economics. Our goal is to develop an evolutionary model that contains the main features of population and resource dynamics, as defined by the main axioms of ecological literature (birth, death, migration with density effects), and extend it to accommodate extensions of interest to economic science, in a computationally efficient setup.

I am also currently collaborating with Willi Semmler on theoretical models of optimal growth and debt sustainability.
